This review is from: Carl Rungius: Artist & Sportsman (Hardcover)
This is a beautifully illustrated book with works by a good painter, one that continued the tradition of the western adventurer and artist which has been so romanticized and abused as of late. As the wilderness around us seems to be an ever-shrinking proposition, the book offers a glimpse into the majesty of North America's wildlife and landscape. The painter displays an honest and solid technique and a great -almost solemn- admiration for its subject. The book also documents well Rungius achievements as a hunter. In this context , many of the artworks seem to become substitutes for stuffed heads and relics of a wounded masculinity a la Hemingway, mere show pieces for the homes of land developers. Like Howard Terpning's paintings, they start to portray a fantasy and portray it well.
