Carl Sandburg grew up in our hometown and I live a few blocks from his birthplace. In grade schools children donate pennies for upkeep of the Sandburg Birthplace. I read this book a few years ago as a library book and it was so good I decided read it again. It is a fascinating account of the life of Carl Sandburg. Including his years at Lombard College, riding boxcars and in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Some books seem to control your life until you finish them; this is one of those books. I was drawn to Sandburg through his voluminous biography of Lincoln, which I also could not put down. Sandburg also wrote his own autobiography "Always The Young Strangers." If you have not read it you should read it as well as this one. |
