5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Toy with CD quality sound
My 6 month old loves this toy. He sometimes plays with it until he falls asleep :-) Each SunRay contains a different item- there is a squeaky toy, beans, scrunchy paper, and a chew toy. The lights light up in tune to the music. It plays 4 tunes and has 2 settings.

Mode 1 is continuous play which auto shuts off after 6 minutes.

Mode 2 is interactive- your baby...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not THAT great after all...
I was quite excited about the Sunshine Symphony after reading several great reviews and chose to disregard the less enthusiastic ones I had come accross. When it arrived, I was surprised by the relatively small size - based on the picture I had expected a larger diameter, bigger petals, etc. At the same time, the toy is rather bulky and unyieldy for small babies, my...

Mode 2 is interactive- your baby touches the suns face and:
First Touch: first half of Tune1 w/one instrument
Second Touch: second half of Tune1 w/one instrument
Third Touch: all of Tune1 w/all instruments
...(then it moves on to Tune2, Tune3 and Tune4.

Positives:
1. Auto Shut off Feature
2. CD quality sound (unlike other baby toys)
3. chew toy on top

Negatives:
1. do not use rechargable batteries- it does not work correctly.
2. I wish it were flatter & less heavy so my baby could manipulate & hold it better.
3. I wish the on/off switch was outside the toy (like Baby Tad) but to shut it on/off you have to unzip it and flick the switch.
4. I am not sure if the zipper for the batteries/switch will pose a concern when my baby grows older...?

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected, January 9, 2002
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars

I just received the sunshine symphony for my three month old daughter and am more impressed than I thought I would be. Firstly, it is very soft and plush with a sweet face. The teething corners will prove useful when she is at that stage. The dancing lights are sure to keep my daughter's attention. But what most impresses me is the quality of the sound. It is so nice to hear Peter and the Wolf and the Nutcracker without sounding tinny. It is actually very pleasant to listen to. Even my four-year-old enjoys it. I have several toys from Fisher-Price's sparkling symphony line that I love for a number of reasons, but they all have that mechanical sound and start to grate on your nerves after a while. I can see this toy being part of our everyday life without getting annoying.

I do, however, agree that the price is an issue. I am glad I purchased this, but I think Neurosmith would do better if the price was comparable with Fisher-Price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mikey Loves It!, December 11, 2001

Our son, Mikey (6 months old), recently was given the Sunshine Symphony toy. He loves it! He seems to really like the bright colors and the music. Neurosmith has paid attention to the sound of the music. While many toys have computer generated sound and/or very "thin" sound, the Sunshine Symphony's music (both the selections as well as the quality of the sound) are truly superior. My wife and I actually like to listen to the music (unlike many other toys which get very old, very quickly!).

Beyond bright colors and sound quality, the Sunshine Symphony seems to be very well made with high quality materials. The flashing lights delight our son, and, at six months age, the teething part of the toy is timely for Mikey.

I'd highly recommend this toy for any child!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Baby Toy Out There!, November 30, 2001
By A Customer
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sunshine Symphony (Toy)
I'm on my second child (one boy one girl) and we have a million baby toys. The Sunshine Symphony is by far my baby's favorite. It holds her attention longer than any of her other toys. All of my "Mom" friends who've brought their babies over for playdates agree that this toy is a "must have". My baby loves it and so does my 2 year old.

Finally, a toy that's pleasant to listen to instead of the tinny kids tunes that normally irritate. The extra price is worth it because this toy is very well-made and the chip inside is obviously several steps above the norm. How nice to hear classical music instead of Old McDonald!

The Sunshine Symphony is especially great for night time car rides and in the crib because the moving lights keep my daughter entertained if she's awake in the dark. When my daughter was really little and couldn't hold on to it I would hang it from the knobs on my cupboard and place her bouncy seat facing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-get product . . . for home or car!!, November 13, 2001

Sunshine Symphony has literally revolutionized my driving! It is now permanently resident in my minivan, and I can't tell you the difference it has made in terms of "quality of life" while driving. I am now quietly entertained by the pleasing sounds of Handel (our wedding march, no less), and the Nutcracker -- two of my favorite compositions of all time -- rather than hearing the incessant whine of Barney crooning the "S'mores" song and "Boom Boom Ain't It Great to Be Crazy" over and over again.

The toy is large enough to remain on my son's lap (he's 13 months old)or in my daugher's hands (she's three), and it's engaging for a long time. Plus, if the child (or in my case, children) fall asleep, the music remains very soothing and does not discourage happy slumber. Highly recommended product! This will be one that you will want to keep in the car for yourself long after your kids outgrow it. I confess that I have turned it on once or twice when I've been in the car alone without the kids!!

I recently received a Sunshine Symphony for my 6 month old. He is fascinated by the lights blinking with the music, likes to feel and chew the different corner points and loves to grab the red button nose. I really appreciate the excellent sound quality (a welcome relief from the horrible electronic music on other toys) and pleasant music selections (important because I hear them a lot). I also like having the two modes of play as my baby hasn't completely figured out cause and effect. Overall another great toy from Neurosmith.

Have you seen the "Sunshine" lately? My wife and I had trouble keeping our son occupied for more than five minutes. We purchased this (innovative) product for its' entertainment value, but we received so much more with its' developmental attributes. The lights, music and different textures it provides has truly captivated our son. When our child understood that by touching or moving the Sunshine Symphony it will generate music, it amazed us. The smile on his face playing with his favorite toy is incredible. Whether we are home or traveling (Enjoying the Sunlight) this toy goes with us. Not just today but for many years to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars A rare find: high quality musical toy, December 8, 2004
By
D. Benner "musician" (Vancouver, BC, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sunshine Symphony (Toy)
I am a professional musician who has searched high and low for musical toys that are "good enough" for my daughter's developing ears. Most infant toys play "midi" style music-- music that is produced electronically instead of using recordings of real musical instruments. Not only is the music in a typical infant toy typically electronically produced, but it is also usually "out of tune," which is not ideal for a child's developing musical ear!

This toy is a rare find in at least two respects: 1) it plays real recordings of live musicians performing their instruments, instead of being electronically produced. This greatly enhances the quality and richness of the sound. 2) It plays "in tune," helping to develop my daughter's pitch sensitivity.

I researched and read many online reviews of this toy before purchasing, and many parents raved about the musical quality of this toy, saying, "Finally! A toy which is enjoyable for us parents to hear playing over and over again!" You don't have to be a professional musician to recognize the high musical quality of this toy.

I do have one negative comment regarding this toy: It does have some durability problems. The hardware itself is durable [the toy doesn't fall apart or anything like that], but the internal software (which plays the music and makes the lights flash) sometimes acts up. For example, sometimes it "freezes" and stops playing the music suddenly, and you have to mess with the on/off switch to get it to restart. It seems that the software is getting more and more finicky as time goes on. So, that is my one negative comment (and I've read other online reviews with similar complaints). Neurosmith, the company which produced this toy, has gone out of business (which is probably why you can get this toy so cheaply now), so you can't get the toy serviced if it has maintenance problems.

However, I would still buy this toy again, even knowing about the durability problem. My daughter LOVED it from the start (I got it for her when she was about three months old) and still loves it (she's six months old now) and probably will for a long time (I've read online reviews saying that this toy is popular with toddlers, too). I am now buying this toy as a gift for my friends with babies. Snatch up one of these toys while they are still available! This is a rare find!

4.0 out of 5 stars Mom of twins, March 15, 2004

We loved this toy when we first got it. My infants were fascinated by the lights and the music was a wonderful relief from some of the other twangy toys we had. It actually soothed my baby boy to sleep when he was battling reflux disease. We were thrilled. Unfortunately, this toy died within two months of our purchasing it. The computer croaked and was beyond repair or new batteries. Now this wonderful colorful toy sits in the toy box untouched. Wish it had been a lot more durable than it was.

Love watching all of the babies reactions to the brightly colored face, the classical music and the way they go after the teething features.
It's been a wonderful baby gift.
