Book Description

July 22, 2002 2 and up
A playful celebration of the everyday things in a child’s world—and the fun of finding out you can count them yourself.

Carlo the giraffe REALLY likes counting, and he counts everywhere he goes. He counts cups in the coffee shop, squirrels in the park, bears in the toy store, even his mother in the backyard.
In the same style as CARLO LIKES READING, Jessica Spanyol’s simple text and clever illustrations invite young readers to point, name, and count throughout the day with Carlo.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In Carlo Likes Counting by Jessica Spanyol, a follow-up to last year s Carlo Likes Reading, the titular giraffe counts from one to 10, with one number to a spread. The happy giraffe observes objects labeled in groupings (in the house, on the lawn, etc.) according to the featured number (e.g., two bees, two bananas, etc., for the number two). Plenty of unlabeled items appear, too, for little ones to point out themselves. (Aug.)

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Spanyol's smiling, stubby-legged giraffe is back (Carlo Likes Reading [Candlewick, 2001]), now ready to help preschoolers practice their numbers from 1 to 10. Each spread offers multiple views of items clustered and tagged by quantity, such as "3 sisters" or "5 cups." From playground to construction site, the author/illustrator cleverly shows not only groups of the highlighted numeral, but also scatters similarly numbered assemblages to reinforce the skill. Busy acrylics maintain control through composition, but the last page is jolting, since it bears no relation to counting. Endpapers show opened notebooks, picturing even more objects to tally.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent counting book for little ones, November 2, 2002
This review is from: Carlo Likes Counting (Hardcover)
As Carlo goes through his day he is presented with lots of opportunities to count. While the story is simple, each page provides a wealth of opportunities to count the number being discussed. At the deli Carlo can count 6 hot dogs but as your child examines the page he or she will find that almost everything in the picture comes in the same quantity. The book offers more of an opportunity for discovery than most counting books.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars!, February 10, 2005
This review is from: Carlo Likes Counting (Paperback)
Carlo loves to count everything he sees--socks, cats, apples, bags, fish, and even raindrops!

This colorful picture book is perfect for the child who is learning to count. Plus, since items are labeled, the illustrations offer good opportunities for matching pictures to text. And children will love the fact that Carlo is a giraffe.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of all the counting books, December 24, 2009
This review is from: Carlo Likes Counting (Paperback)
There are lots of counting books out there. However, this one is unusual because each time the child turns the page, he/she is not just counting ONE group of items representing a particular number -- but dozens of sets of items. Some of them are labeled for the child, but then there are still more that the child has to seek out for him/herself.

This book really reinforces each number. I'm impressed! But one warning -- if you are reading this with your child, you could be reading it for about an hour just because there are so many things to count! (In my opinion, that's a good thing! The more time spent reading to your kids, the better.)
