A glorious surprise!,

This review is from: Carlos Guastavino: Flores Argentinas (Audio CD)
I discovered the songs of Carlos Guastavino, and the superb singing of Desiree Halac all at once. This great Argentine composer, all too little known to most listeners seems to have had an endless wealth of emotional resources in his compositional palette. His countrywoman, Desiree Halac, so expertly accompanied by Dalton Baldwin, makes these songs go right to our heart. I found myself absolutely unable to turn off the CD once I started listening, I was so enthralled!
These pieces recall some of the great Spanish composers, of course - Albeniz, Granados, but there are other influences (jazz here, some South American rhythms there). The result is immensely appealing!
