Amazing on every level,
By
This review is from: Carlos Saura Dance Trilogy, Part 3: El Amor Brujo (DVD)
I first saw this movie on Bravo, a very, very long time ago. I wish it was available in NTSC format. This is an astonishing movie on every possible level, as a flamenco/dance production, as a love story, as a tragedy, as a ghost-story, as a story of redemption, as an sastonishing adaptation of the ballet score, Miguel de Falla's El Amor Brujo. As the third in Antonio Gades' Flamenco Trilogy, I think it is the jewel in the crown.

I LOVE El Amour Brujo and Carmen by Saura and Gades. They are pure sensory experiences that will linger in your heart. Moments and movements and emotions from the film will creep into your mind at odd moments. And you'll feel invigorated by their intensity.
And they are finally on DVD

This film tells a deeply moving story all within the parameters of a flamenco dance/musical. Every gesture is choreographed and meaningful. The performers, choreography and music are all top notch. Worth seeing over and over.

This movie is excellent, but you have to have knowledgeof the hispanic culture, and specially flamenco (dance) and to keep in mind that the dancers in this movie are or try to represent gypsies, in Spain. The movie is well made, and the passion of the dancers is evident, if you are hispanic you will feel your blood running in your veins, and if you are a flamenco dancer this movie is a must to see, you will recognize a lot of steps, some of them new to you. Sincerly Rafael Roces

This film is an essential for anyone interested in Flamenco. This is the film that made me want to pursue flamenco dance further. Carlos Saura does an excellent job of portraying the gypsy character, the dance, and cante, all of which are passionate, full of emotion, and pain. He ties this together with an engaging and timeless story of love and loss.

Why is this film not on American/Canadian DVD-compatible format? I saw it on reel-to-reel at a small university. It combines Manuel de Falla's musical composition with striking photography of life in a Madrid slum, a opera-suited love story and the best flamenco dancing I've ever seen. Stunning.

This review is from: Carlos Saura Dance Trilogy, Part 3: El Amor Brujo (DVD)
After years of searching at long last, found. This is indeed a most inspiring look into the heart of the magic of the flamenco tradition. Saura is a genius with his staging of this most penetrating deeply Spanish music and dance. The passion held me tight in its grip. The sincerity with which this is portrayed is breath taking. Anyone interested in real music and dance and the power that it can exhude must have a copy of this DVD.
