All of the Carl books are thoughtful and creative, though this one is my favorite so far. I love making up the words for each of the books. The format definitely encourages analysis and discussion in a fun way. Little ones must look carefully and closely at each picture and think about how they choose to interpret the events. This book would make a timely birthday gift as well.

The basic premise is that "Mom" sends Carl and the baby girl (now a toddler) next door for their naps so that she can prepare for Carl's surprise birthday party. Of course, mischievous Carl and the baby sneak back and get into everything before the party.

This story is full of sweet little details (Carl receives a toy sized Rottweiler which they can't seem to get rewrapped quite right. Carl takes a bite out the cake and disguises it with a carefully placed flower. Somehow, all the toys that Mom picked up end up back out and under the party table....what Mom can't relate to that one!)

But most of all, I appreciate the free spirited theme that underpins these books. For me, they are a reminder that all of the details that seem so critical are really just a means to a bigger end. In the end, it's the spirit and joy of childhood that is important, a spirit that Carl and that little girl epitomize without saying a single word.

I'm a mission to purchase all the Carl books. I think it's a great way to show children how wonderful animals and pets can be. I especially like the board book format. It will allow my baby to enjoy it for a long time.

This is just the most beautiful children's book. The watercolor pictures are magical. The story is told mostly in these wonderful pictures. You can tell it slightly differently each time, and your child can make up words when old enough. The pictures tell a story that is full of love, humor, and happiness. It just warms my heart. My son and I love it equally. We received it as a gift and plan to buy the rest of the Carl books. What a joy of a book.

Be very careful if you intend to direct ship this to a recipient. No one loves Carl more than I, so I was eagerly looking forward to starting a new friend on her collection. My first book arrived and to my shock had page 10 one-third obliterated by a yellow ink swath. I returned the book and quickly received a replacement. WITH THE SAME DEFECT!!!!!!!!!! Frustrating calls to customer service only produced the suggestion that I try again and hope for the best. No one is apparently capable of opening this simple book and checking for the misprint. After notifying the publisher of Amazon's sale of second quality books, I cancelled and ordered from Barnes and Noble. I would be even more upset if this had been sent as a gift. If I had to choose a favorite Carl book (they're all favorites!), this would be it. The story line is so clever, and the whole book is so funny!

This book is art with simplistic text at its finest. My daughter fell in love with "Carl". Heck, we all did. Great choice!

We've got all the Carl books! If you're just starting out I'd recommend Carl's Masquerade or Good Dog, Carl. If you have to have all the Carl books (like we did!), then by all means, go for it.

The wordless story is always a hit with my toddler. We can make the story as short or long as she likes.

I won't try to critically review this. Others have already done it wonderfully. I just have to add that my 16 month old daughter requests to read this book every night (we read 3 books each bedtime). She calls it "Birthday." So for now our bedtime reading is "Carl's Birthday" plus another 2 books. I think we need to buy her some more Carl books as this is the only one in our collection. Thankfully this a board book as she destroys anything in her sight made of regular paper.

This book is the perfect tool to stir the imagination of a toddler. It has pictures which the child can interpret and use to imagine the action. Great little book!

I love the Carl books, but this one isn't my favorite. Still a very, very good book.
