I just wanted to share my experience with Carlson Fish Oil. But before I continue, please note that I am not an MD, but a PhD in Computer Science. This review is purely about me as a father, caring for his son. Please do not take this as medical advice. Everything I state here based solely on factual events and not on a Medical double blind study. I have to make this very clear as some people have even gone so far as to question my integrity.

That being said, I have an 11 year old son with Autism. My son's autism was severe, a 9/10 score. He has frequent, violent self injury to his head where would bang his head on the wall or with his fists, several times a day. He had to wear extremely high noise reducing shooting earmuffs so that he could go outside so that noises wouldn't trigger a full meltdown. Not to mention the almost complete lack of social interaction. Before taking Carlson, he was capable of speech, but only would do so if asked a question and prompted multiple times. He never really initiated a conversation.

I started him on this 9 months ago and actually gave him 1 teaspoon once a day at the start, then gradually increased it to 1 tablespoon 2 times a day after about 2 months. The difference has been dramatic.

    1. He only wears headphones rarely. Noises do not trigger meltdowns as they used to.
    2. He sits down with us in the family room and tells us about the movie he is watching on his IPAD.
    3. He plays with his little sister now briefly everyday. He could not be in the same room with her before.
    4. His self talk has increased though.
    5. He initiates spontaneous brief conversations.
    6. His self injury has been reduced dramatically. He only had 2 self injury incidents last month. Down from several times a day.

Fish oil capsules cause me to have fish oil after-burps (yuck!), which make me avoid taking fish oil at all. I prefer Carlson's fish oil, but only because I learned the trick of how to swallow a teaspoon of it without gagging.

Have a glass of water or juice handy. Measure out your teaspoon of oil in a tablespoon sized spoon, so you have less chance of spilling it. Take the teaspoon of fish oil in to your mouth, let it gather under your tongue, but do not swallow it until you take your glass of water and wash it down. I take the fish oil before I eat breakfast. No fish burps later. You can do it. It is worth it.

The lemon flavor only partially masks the fishiness of the oil, but it is better than pure fish smell. I think Carlson's fish oil is an excellent product, pure and fresh.

This is a side-by-side comparison of six liquid omega-3 supplements: Udo's Oil 3*6*9 Blend (Liquid), Omapure Liquid Omega-3 Fish Oil, Carlson Labs Very Finest Liquid Fish Oil, Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega Liquid, Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Liquid (Non-concentrated), and Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega Xtra Liquid (Concentrated).

There are three major components of omega-3 in these products: EPA (which is good for your heart, circulatory system, lowering triglycerides, depression and mood orientation, and is a powerful anti-inflammatory for soothing joint pains), DHA (which is good for your mental acuity, or if you are pregnant, nursing an infant, or for children), and "other." Other omega-3s, like DPA and SDA, are types of fatty acids which are easily converted to EPA in the body. In most fish oils, the amount of these other fatty acids is low, but in highly concentrated oils, it can be a significant amount. The important components are EPA and DHA.

SOURCE OF FISH OIL AND UDO'S OIL: Unlike fish oil, which comes primarily from fish such as anchovies, sardines, mackerel, cod, pollock and whiting, Udo's oil comes from fresh flax, sesame and sunflower seeds, as well as oils from evening primrose, rice germ and oat germ.

BREAKDOWN: Here is a breakdown of these supplements.

I started taking fish oil shortly after beginning a heavy, high-intensity weight training program. I take a large spoonful of this product once in the morning and once in the evening, everyday. I originally bought it without being sure of it's efficacy because almost every serious lifter seems to take fish oil.

However, I've twice run out of it for a few days and the effects of that are acutely noticeable. General muscle soreness is more prevalent and, most noticeably, I develop tendonitis in my knees due to heavy barbell squats. Once I start taking the fish oil again, the aches and pains disappear within 2-3 days. I take a lot of supplements and this is the only one I am 100% certain is worth the money.
