5.0 out of 5 stars Best of The Best
Carlson Liver Oil and Omega 3 Products are the best of the best according to my nutritionist who has a masters on the subject. In use, the above mentioned Carlson products have really helped my health by taking one a day with a meal of both the Liver Oil and the Super Omega 3. I highly recommend.

You should not take modern cod liver oil unless you at least are taking high doses of vitamin D. This product contains 2000 IUs of vitamin A but ONLY 250 IUs of vitamin D and this is a problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good product, great company, February 25, 2009
This review is from: Carlson Laboratories - Super Cod Liver Oil, 1000 mg, 250 softgels (Health and Beauty)
I have used these cod liver oil softgels for years and have always liked them. The Vitamin Shoppe also has excellent customer service, and quickly replaced an order that had been lost in shipping without any hassle.

This review is from: Carlson Laboratories - Super Cod Liver Oil, 1000 mg, 250 softgels (Health and Beauty)
You should not take modern cod liver oil unless you at least are taking high doses of vitamin D. This product contains 2000 IUs of vitamin A but ONLY 250 IUs of vitamin D and this is a problem.

[According to the life extension website]: A study published in year 2004 showed that cod liver oil and a multivitamin slightly reduced mean number of respiratory infections in children, but the total number of doctor visits for these infections was slightly higher in the cod liver oil/multivitamin group (68 versus 61). The 1930s study demonstrated far superior benefits with cod liver oil.

One difference between these studies is that cod liver oil in the 1930s study had more vitamin D. The other issue is that children in the 2004 study received 3,500 IU of preformed vitamin A (not beta-carotene) and only 700 IU of vitamin D.

Given what we now know, a more appropriate dose should have been 500-1,000 IU of vitamin A (instead of 3,500 IU used in the 2004 study) and 2,000-3,000 IU of vitamin D3 (as opposed to 700 IU used in the 2004 study).
Excess Vitamin A Can Thwart Vitamin D

Vitamins A and D compete for each other's function in the body. Preformed vitamin A, found in excess amount in many commercial supplements, can thwart vitamin D's protective effects. This is not an issue with beta-carotene, as it converts to vitamin A in the body only on demand.

Consumption of excess preformed vitamin A, as found in commercial multivitamins and modern cod liver oil, may cause bone toxicity in those with inadequate vitamin D status. One study showed that women with the highest intake of preformed vitamin A had 2.1 times more hip fractures. A meta-analysis found that people who took preformed vitamin A supplements had a 16% increase in overall mortality, perhaps through antagonism of vitamin D.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carlson's Cod Liver Oil, October 23, 2009
This is a great price for this - better than anything I can find around here. It was recommended to me for my (thyroid-induced) thinning hair. It works dramatically well!

There's always a trade-off, it seems. With capsules I can't avoid the fishy 'after-burp', but it's good to have something portable. With liquid there's the inconvenience of spoons and getting it on your hands(impossible to remove the smell for at least a day), but better absorption. Either way, it's a good accompaniment to increase vitamins A and D and aid your omega fatty acid balance.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buy "Lightly Lemon" instead of "Super 1000mg", July 9, 2011

Here are the supplement Facts per soft gel for Cod Liver Oil "Lightly Lemon" and the Cod Liver Oil with "Low Vitamin A":

Vitamin A: 150 IU (3% Daily Value)
Vitamin D: 80 IU (20% Daily Value)
Vitamin E: 2 IU (7% Daily Value)
Omega-3: 230mg
EPA: 85mg
DHA: 100mg

If you buy the Carlson Cod Liver Oil "Super 1000mg", be aware that it has high contents of Vitamins A, D, and E which can be toxic if you take too much:

Vitamin A: 2000 IU (40% Daily Value)
Vitamin D: 250 IU (63% Daily Value)
Vitamin E: 10 IU (33% Daily Value)
Omega-3: 240mg
EPA: 90mg
DHA: 120mg

I believe the "Lightly Lemon" taste the best plus it has low Vitamin A and it gives you about the same amount of Omega-3. If you buy the "Super 1000mg" which Carlson recommends to take 5 soft gels per day, that means you will have 200% Vitamin A which is not good for your health. In my opinion, by swallowing the soft gel with water might be better than chewing the soft gel because the Cod Liver Oil is better absorbed in your stomach instead of the mouth.

Also on the bottom of the bottle says best used by 2015, I bought this in 2011, so expiration is about 4 to 5 years.

This is a good strong vitamin supplement without countless additives. Most such supplements seem to contain calcium which is a liability for me (kidney stone attacks). With the newest health information out telling us we need lots more Vit D than had previously been believed, Cod Liver Oil in this form is easy to take at this much better dosage. I do happen to believe this company produces purer vitamins than many (my personal opinion with no connection to the company other than consumer).

In addition I feel at 74, I need a strong immune system which this is known for. Along with that, moving to a state with long winters (after years in Texas)the lack of year around sunlight tends to cause some depression which Cod Liver Oil definitely affects positively.

Add to this a reasonable cost in these tough economic times, and am pleased all around.

I'm currently ordering my 2nd bottle of this very tasty product. Previously shipped quickly; am anticipating the same good service and great product. I'll bet you could use this with a little balsamic on your salad. Think I'll try it!! It's that good-tasting.

This is my first purchase from this company. The service is fast and efficient. I will need a little time to elaborate on the quality of the product. However, a friend of mine who also uses Cod Liver Oil has a very high regard for products purchased from this company.
