5.0 out of 5 stars Hypoglycemic help at your fingertips!!!, July 1, 1998

This review is from: Carlton fredericks' new low blood sugar and you (Paperback)
This book was not only a useful source of information, but it also was a great eye opener. It contains many stories of people who have been mis-diagnosed with other diseases and taking harsh treatment, when all they needed was a change of diet. As well, as making a connection between allergies and low blood sugar. Several diets to choose from are included in this book. As well as the eye opening list of symptoms. I hope this book helps many more people as it has helped me.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book Second Time Around, April 9, 1997

This review is from: Carlton fredericks' new low blood sugar and you (Paperback)
I read the last edition of this book 17 years ago when I was first diagnosed with Low Blood Sugar. I was delighted to find it had been updated with new information. Especially interesting to me was the importance of Complex B vitamins in processing of carbohydrates and fats. This book also deals with the damage processing does to many of the foods we eat today, and brings to light what I've always thought "Natural Foods are less likely to cause distress than processed foods.

4.0 out of 5 stars An oldie but a goodie, August 25, 2006
This review is from: Carlton fredericks' new low blood sugar and you (Paperback)
I first read this book back in 1987 after I had been suffering from persistent hypoglycemia for about a year. The doctors said my blood tests were normal and tried giving me all kinds of unhelpful prescription drugs for what they perceived might be simple anxiety, allergies, inner ear problems, and at one point, even a brain tumor!

The author's book consists of plain and safe advice - meal spacing and frequency to prevent lows, along with what really helped me - his advice on nutritional supplements. To be exact, he advises hypoglycemics take a good B-complex vitamin with extra pantothenic acid and choline and inositol as well as daily doses of brewer's yeast to get easily absorbed amounts of GTF chromium into your system. His advice brought me back from the dead. The supplements were absolutely essential to my recovery. When I saw my doctor and told him about the supplements and how they cured me, he wrote it off as coincidence. After all, it wasn't drugs or surgery, so my recovery couldn't be real could it?

The author does spend a lot of unnecessary space in his book trying to convince readers that hypoglycemia exists, but most of the book is still excellent. Before you try more elaborate, expensive, and possibly unsafe recommendations for your hypoglycemia, give this old book a try. I recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but for one mistake, August 12, 2001

The book reflects my trail and error attempts at controling my blood sugar. I found a mistake on page 219 with respect to the glycemic index of skim milk and whole milk. The book states that skim milk has a lower glycemic index than whole milk when the opposite is true. Other than that, the book is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars anything Carlton does is a must-have ..., June 17, 2003

Quite simply, one of the best nutritionists there ever was...

Rational, sane, and coherent, follow Carlton Fredericks' advice: and read the other nutrition authors he recommends.

One place he falls short, is the environmental and psychological impact on health. All is not in food. One needs to get the unhealthy stresses and influences out of one's life. The issue, for example, of the company we keep, and its impact on our health, is not emphasised enough in his work.

But his dietary advice is intelligent, discretionary, and diverse. Fredericks is no 'food faddist.' Follow his advice, and you are well on the road to better health.

I wouldn't be without the Carlton Frederick's books I own, and always look to acquire more when I can find them. Heed his food advice. Heed his supplement advice. Believe me, you won't regret it. A truly worthy investment, from all points of view. And with all his well-researched expertise, he's got a sense of humor, too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book, July 5, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
just revisited this book after having read it 20 years (or more) ago, in the original. It is very eye opening. When I first read it at the tender age of 24, I diagnosed myself as hyperinsulinistic, and got off the sugar. That's not an easy trick, considering the culture of family around me that did everything in her power (Mom, who else?) to sabotage my new diet, and play manipulation to make me feel bad for not sharing in the addiction she raised me on. Now, she's 80, and freshly diagnosed diabetic, and refuses to go on Dr's drugs (made her feel bad), so this book is now going to her. It's all related, it's not a separate thing. Also new is high fructose corn syrup, came out after the book, so is not mentioned. Google fructose rats for some eye openers on the creation of diabetes, metabolic syndrome, congestive heart failure, cushing's syndrome and other irritations caused by fructose.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent aid in identifying possible hypoglycemics, June 25, 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: Carlton fredericks' new low blood sugar and you (Paperback)
This book is helpfull to people who think they may have hypoglycemia, commonly known as high blood sugar. It has a list of symtoms and gives stories of people discovering their hypoglycemia. Unfortunatly, because it is so old, 1971, a few things are innacurate. For example, he no longer recomends the GTT (Glucose Tolerance Test) for possible hypoglycemics. Not only is this an emotionally draining experience, there is no need. Now he reccomends that people switch to a hypoglycemic diet, which is fully outlined in the book, and see if this alleviates their syptoms. Also, in this book, the issue of mercury fillings promoting hypoglycemia is not adressed
