What more can you ask of a regency!

Lord Giles Carlton, a handsome, ex-military and agent of the crown stumbles into trouble when he meets the disguised Roma Allendyle. The once happy-go-lucky rake finds himself falling for and tricking the unsuspecting, unconventional Roma into wedlock!

Roma is in search of her missing brother, another one of the crown's agents, only to be thwarted at every turn by Giles. Giles is operating under the mistaken belief that women were fragile creatures and should be sheltered at all costs -- hence his attempts to take over her investigation into her brother's disappearance!

This is a good weekend read. It does take a bit too long, in my opinion, to actually find the missing brother. But once he's found, all is well & ends quiet happily!

If you are looking for intrigue, romance, and adventure, this book has it all. It's very interesting and romantic how the hero and heroine meet. I also enjoyed the witty exchange of dialouge between them. The rest of the book deals with a nice development of the romance and the search for the heroine's missing brother. It's very sweet how Lord Carlton helps find the missing brother and falls in love in the process.

If you are considering reading this book as your first experience with Debbie Raleigh, please read this first. According to the blurb in the back of this book, this is the first Regency romance written by this author. For me, it was just barely three stars. The storyline seems to have come directly from an outline of "how to plot a novel". The heroine, Miss Roma Allendyle, was a feisty wench. Often stupidly so and to the detriment of herself and everyone around her. I don't like heroines who are so strong willed that they are incapable of accepting advice from anyone. No matter that it was sound advice, if it interfered with what she wanted to do she just ignored it. I also don't like a hero, Lord Giles Carlton, who is so incredibly sure of himself that he thinks it reasonable to force this woman into allowing him to solve the mystery of her missing brother. For gosh sakes, he didn't even know her brother and had just known her for a tiny bit of time. He wasn't even portrayed as being attracted to her, just intrigued by her fiesty wenchiness (just made that word up but it conveyes my meaning very well!). Both of these lead characters were annoying for me. They made me feel that they had been written to play a part but that the part might not actually suit them. I couldn't get to the real person because they seemed so one dimensional. This is my role, I must play it because it is written for me. Period, end of discussion.

Because the book seems to be written to formula, the bad guy was telegraphed in capital letters. He had not uttered one word of dialogue before I knew he was the villian of the piece. Not well done.

The thrilling conclusion came as a totally non-thrilling conclusion. I just wanted it over. Everything was predictably predictable which is sad, sad, sad.

If you want to read Debbie Raleigh, read other books by her first. I have loved "The Wedding Clause" and "A Convenient Marriage" just to name two. Save this one for when you have every other book she has ever written and you just must have this one to complete your set.
