Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-8 Carly, who is angry with her father for having been irresponsible and, she thinks, uncaring when her mother was dying of cancer, flees her dad in Los Angeles to take refuge with young Aunt Lu and Uncle Ben in the Adirondacks. There she becomes fascinated by the deer populating the surrounding forests. Fastening her emotions on the deer, especially a beautiful young buck, Carly is horrified to realize that her new friend Chet and his family are planning to track and kill the deer during hunting season. Through the heated arguments of both the hunters and Carly, Adler presents the pros and cons of hunting. Carly has some tough times to get through, including the killing of her favorite buck, but when the pain begins to subside, she admits that she does love her father and accepts him with all his frailties. The pace is leisurely; it is well into the book that readers find out why Carly is so angry with her father and that she herself has feelings of guilt about her own behavior during her mother's illness. But there are two interesting issues treated here: one of forgiveness, the other of the eternal quarrel between hunter and non-hunter. Susan F. Marcus, Pollard Middle School, Needham, Mass.
