Except for the first four tracks, the Carmen act preludes, this is a
very unhackneyed program, and the digital remastering makes these old
readings sing beautifully. The drums at the end of Bizet's Roma really
pound, and the body of orchestral sound in Chabrier's Gwendoline overture,
another exercise in le Wagnerisme, is impressive. The Espana actually
dates from 1939. but you'd never know it without checking the text
booklet. French music was Beecham's favorite (except for Delius), and he
gets into each piece with love and style. The Great Recordings series is
already excellent, but this unit in particular is a highlight.

I was skeptical from the start, Beecham on french music? but went for it because of some pieces not easy to find anywhere else (Gwendoline overture by Chabrier and Dolly by Faurè). My inital doubts were confirmed after listening. Precise sound and composure, but this is not what I am after on french music, I love wit and fantasy and, to me, here we are out ot both. Not always better be clear, but in general there is a sense of restrain, and if I think of a Martinon or a Paray, we are very far. In the end a good buy for the rarities enclosed (not to forget Le Rouet d'Omphale by Saint Saens) and the price, do not regret it at all.

Sir Thomas Beecham was a master of French orchestral and operatic music, as witness his best-selling recordings of Bizet, Faure, Berlioz, Delibes, Saint-Saens, Chabrier, Franck, Gounod, Debussy, etc. In fact, despite Beecham's dedication to British music, he said he personally loved French music best of all. This album shows him at his best, injecting a typical Beecham charm and delight into every piece.

John J. Puccio, Classical Candor

The performances on this disc are very fine, but modern listeners will probably be distracted by the crudeness of the recorded sound in many of the tracks. Note that the disc includes only the first of two Carmen suites; listeners expecting the second set will be disappointed. The material on this disc is more than 50 years old and should probably be marketed at a lower price point.
