Product Description

{WINNER, Audience Award, Best Brazilian Film, Sao Paulo Int'l Film Festival}
{Official Selection, Sundance Film Festival}

Carmo would do anything to escape the hellhole of a Brazilian border town where she lives. So when a lonesome, wheelchair-bound low-life named Marco arrives on the scene, she jumps at the chance to help him transport a shipment of smuggled goods. An unlikely romance unfolds as the two are chased through a lush and jagged South American landscape by bandidos, the police and their own passions alike. A lawless, reckless journey of self-discovery, this Sundance dazzler refuels the classic road-trip genre.

Review

A screwball road movie inspired by the wildest stylings of Leone, Fellini and Tarantino! --Todd McCarthy, Variety

Terrifically offbeat and charming! Intriguing characters and strong lead performances. Double crosses, playful absurdity, and even a little romance. --This Week in New York

Pulp Fiction meets It Happened One Night. Rueful humor and tropical sensuality! --The New York Times

Frantic, frenetic, chaotic and loud--"Carmo, Hit The Road" assaults your senses from its opening sequence. Stylized beyond measure, this quick cut madness will either delight you or alienate you pretty quickly. However, I encourage you to stay with this unusual tale that combines elements of crime drama with screwball comedy with unlikely romance, because this offbeat film has genuine heart beneath its deliciously saucy exterior! I, for one, reveled and laughed appreciatively throughout this ludicrous journey to nowhere. A delightfully inept chase film in which no one seems to get anywhere, "Carmo" assembles an eclectic cast of unlikable character types and then gets you to like them! It's a tremendous feat to layer comic mayhem on so heavily, add real violence, and still maintain an underlying sweetness that drives compassion for the misfits on screen. Precisely balanced--for my money, this film hits all the right notes and is an unapologetically robust entertainment.

Telling the story of party girl Carmo, the film presents a bleak view of small town life in Brazil. Carmo is desperate to escape her empty world of drunkenness and promiscuity (or at least transport it to a larger venue!). She meets up with Marco, a wheelchair bound smuggler, who is NOT enamored of her charms. Insinuating herself into Marco's existence, the two form a tentative truce as they encounter many perils and oddities on their journey to unload his cargo. Combating sexual assault and robbery, there are plenty of double crosses and surprises in store on this road trip. Add a pregnant teen, a jealous ex, a religious zealot, bungling thieves, and an ethereal boss lady--and "Carmo" remains in overdrive action throughout.

"Carmo, Hit The Road" simply put, is delicious. Watching the film, you will find yourself seeing, tasting and hearing the experience so acutely, that you will need to watch it again to capture what you may have missed the first time. Mariana Loureiro's portrayal of Carmo, is magnificent as she navigates the edges of her character while giving the audience the privilege of watching her innate gifts as an actress- one who can emote great emotions from within you often without even speaking.

My only regret is the lack of the director's cut- I wanted to hear the back-story of how the scenes were composed and how the director was able to take the audience to those back roads with such sensuality and artistic humor. From the music to the outstanding visual imagery, it is not surprising the critical acclaim that Sundance followers raved about- a must see.

Great road trip film with interesting characters, gritty, might be in Portuguese but translated into English. Well worth a look at a Sundance foreign film!
