Gaby Kerpel is an Argentinian musician, and a real discovery! Kerpel makes use of folk instruments, and his rather nasal vocal style suggests the singing of folk musicians. But rather than engage in quaint reproductions of native music, Kerpel takes full advantage of what a contemporary studio can offer, and uses loops, samples, changes of speed, etc. to warp these sounds into something rich and strange. Sung entirely in Spanish (with helpful translations provided: thanks, Nonesuch!), these songs evolve into catchy grooves, without ever sounding generic. Consider the weird speed changes at the beginning and end of "Herias sin Herir" (which includes some rich string quartet playing as well). Or the way several different rhythms accumulate at the beginning of "Sintenerte." It's very inventive stuff, and you can dance to it. I've recently been enjoying some great wines from Argentina: this disk is just as tasty.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gaby ..yeah., October 8, 2003

i dig it! i reccomend to all you amazon folks out there. i was skeptical and ready to scoff at it, deeming it a sort of world new age crap thing, but it turned out to be totally different, and while it is worldly and earth based, it's very electronic as well. it's great to have on while cleaning the house or having people over for dinner. it's a very chill, laid back, but demanding disc.

the new disc shines. when i put it on, i knew i'd dig it. it's very organic in texture yet remains electronic and almost blippy as well. it's as if bjork vacationed in latin terrains and wrote an album. check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars canabalito, September 19, 2003

modern classical music meets argentinian folk music? yeah well thats what it is. And it works splendedly. Ive never had an interest in world music or nessicaraly folk music from anywhere but american and the UK but after stummbling across Canabalito im much more inclined to study it further. As a musician i heard elements of south american music which surly must have influenced the rythems of blonde redhead and and the harmonies of phill collins. A fascinating piece of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars new life for an old sound, September 19, 2003

This review is from: Carnabailito (Audio CD)
In Gaby Kerpels newest endeavor "Carnabalito" revives or rather reworks the beautiful folk songs of South America. The songs on his album retain the simplistic understated rhythms and melodies of this native folk music while adding the complex and fascinating theory behind modern classical composition. Mr. kerpel has out done himself and given fans of modern, folk and world music an important work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Totally OK music, May 30, 2004

This review is from: Carnabailito (Audio CD)
I wasn't going to buy this at all, but I knew it was going to be cool so I did. Plugged it in and laid back, but figured it would be isochronal and I'd have to pop it out immediately. But it was totally chill, not some laughable crap thing. Ethereal, soft and floating drums and flutes punched straight through my brain pan. Organic, earthy and electronic. Totally, definitely sort of blippy. Like if Alison Krauss and Union Station's plane crashed into the Amazon jungle and they were devoured by an undiscovered band of flesh-eating aboriginals, who then formed a recording studio using the aircraft's flight control panel and some brazil nuts. Tasty.
