One Good, One Bad... Unless You Have a Penchant For Hippies!,
By Sheila Chilcote-Collins "Sheila Renee Chilcot... (Collinswood, Van Wert, OH USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Carnival of Blood / Curse of the Headless Horseman (DVD)
This installment in the "Something Weird" DVD collection has one GREAT sleazy & scary movie titled, Carnival Of Blood. Coney Island Carnival has a murderer who just LOVES to kill hilariously ANNOYING women is on the loose. Who COULD it BE??? A strange little sicky! One of the best perfomances is given by a very young, Burt Young as a hunchbacked carnie. (You know, Paulie from the Rocky movies!)The Curse Of The Headless Horseman is just plain awful. Mark Callahan inherits is dead uncle's Wild West tourist attraction. Though he and his hippy friends have been warned. They ingore the "curse" only to meet with the sharp end of the famous and ghostly marauder's knife! Cameo appearance by Andy Warhol's 5 seconds of fame person, Ultra-Violet who carries around a Superman lunchbox!!! Some of the best things about the whole "Something Weird" DVDs are the extras like: movie shorts, TV spots, Shockorama horror trailers for lots of their weird movies, galleries of exploitation art and even Horrorama RADIO SPOT ADS! These DVD's are fun and interesting if you are into this kind of genre...

Carnival of Blood is Lots of FUN!!,

This review is from: Carnival of Blood / Curse of the Headless Horseman (DVD)
CARNIVAL OF BLOOD is quite a good exploitation horror film from the seventies. A slasher runs around killing extremely annoying women on Coney Island. Women are not portrayed very kindly in this film. They are cruel, pushy, money grubbing and all the one's that die take advantage of men in some way. The last victim, a bleached blonde, middle aged woman is quite a hoot. She is like Cyndi Lauper gone to seed with some Edith Massey thrown in. On the other hand CURSE OF THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN is absolute dreck. Like BILLY JACK crossed with an episode of SCOOBY DOO...it just meanders all over the place with hippies, well acting like hippies, while trying to solve a stupid mystery which really turns out to be kind of like, "I would have gotten away with it if it weren't for..." Horror films where hippies living in an unpopular theme park (like it was a commune) while uncovincingly dropping acid, and being killed off one by one by a wannabe yuppie is not my cup of tea. It sounds way more interesting than it is. Buy this for CARNIVAL OF BLOOD and watch it twice before you ever attempt the horror of the second feature.

A Something Weird Carnival,

This double feature DVD from Something Weird Video contains the movie Carnival of Blood(1970/89mins) and Curse of the Headless Horseman(1972/81mins). Carnival of blood takes place at the famed Coney Island in New York and is a great time capsule of the place from 1970. This movie is sick, deranged, and charming in it's own way. Everything looks dirty and creepy, just right for this movie. Curse of the Headless Horseman is also deranged, nonsensical, but not as charming. Still, the sickness factor is up there.
Additionally, like all other SWV DVD's, there a bunch extras to bloody your appetite. There are two combo TV spots, about 30 seconds each(Curse of the Headless Horseman/Carnival of Blood) and 8 trailers(Asylum of Satan, Crypt of Dark Secrets, The Dead One, House of Exorcism, Hunchback of the Morgue, She Freak, 3 on a Meathook, and Werewolves on Wheels). You also get 3 Short Subjects. The first is called Carnival Show and runs about 9 mins. This short is in b&w and looks to be from the 40's. There's a guy who sells 'frankfurters' and does a musical about it. The next two shorts are homemade. The first one is called The Hunchback of Massapequa Park and runs about 5 mins. There is no dialogue just dubbed in spooky music. It is in color and appears to have been made in the 70's. Shot in a real neighborhood and very, very weird! The second one is called Hands of Justice which runs about 6 mins. Also no dialogue. At certain points you see a computer screen with some sentences explaining the story. This thing is weird, gory and made in 1981. The last extra is a Gallery of Horror Drive-In Exploitation Art with Horrorama Radio-Spot Rarities. You see a bunch of posters of 60's and 70's horror flicks along with audio promos for some old drive-ins featuring some of these movies. The audio is amusing and yes, weird. This feature runs about 5 mins. Overall this is a solid package with the usual trippy, far out, creepy 'crap' from the folks at Something Weird Video.

First off the Curse of the Headless Horseman is to be nice not very good, but don't let that stop you from watching Carnival Of Blood. It's a true sleaze classic with a great performance by a young Burt Young as Gimpy. As usual with a something weird dvd the it's packed with extras.

This is a Something Weird Video Double Feature that contains Carnival of Blood (1970) and Curse of the Headless Horseman (1974).Carnival of Blood is one of those movies that is so bad, it's good. This is a no-budget B movie that really should be classified as a C movie, if there is such a thing. Basically the plot involves a psychopathic killer who stalks victims around the Coney Island amusement park in New York. This movie has horrible acting, horrible direction, horrible cinematography, horrible lighting, horrible special effects, pretty much horrible everything. BUT, there is something about this movie that hits the spot with me. I like the fact that it's set mostly at night in an amusement park, which is right up my alley. I'm also a fan of raw, grainy, unpolished film instead of everything being so crystal clear, polished, and infested with C.G.I. all the time. I like the time period the movie is set in as well, which is 1970, the height of the hippie era. Now, I don't care for the whole hippie subculture thing, but I feel a sense of nostalgia when I see old, grainy, early '70s films like this one. The hairstyles, the clothing, the cars, the fact that life was so much simpler back then - really resonates with me. Hippie folk music was used throughout the movie. This will really put you through a time warp. The only carnival music you'll hear is the music playing on the fairgrounds at Coney Island. It's fascinating to look at the old rides and attractions that were at Coney Island during this time period. This movie stars Earle Edgerton, Judith Resnick, Martin Barolsky, Kaly Mills, Linda Kurtz, William Grannel, Glen Kimberley, Eve Packer, Gloria Spivak, and John Harris (Burt Young, who played "Paulie" in the Rocky movies). The music is by The Brooks Group. The movie runs 89 minutes. Most of the women in this movie are pretty annoying in the way they act. They argue with men and throw temper tantrums. The fortune teller was creepy AND annoying. This was Burt Young's film debut. He plays a weird hunchbacked carnie named Gimpy. This DVD comes with special features, including eight B horror movie trailers. It also comes with the previously mentioned Curse of the Headless Horseman, which I'm not even going to review because it is just plain awful. It gets negative 77,324,908,701,914 stars from me (that's seventy-seven trillion, three hundred twenty-four billion, nine hundred eight million, seven hundred one thousand, nine hundred fourteen stars). So, my 4-star rating is for Carnival of Blood only. The other movie? I pretend it doesn't exist.

I thought this would be okay. This is soooooooooooooo stupid!! Burt Young is in this, I must say he made a better Uncle Paulie in ROCKY than a carnival freak!! I do NOT recommend anyone to buy this at full price!!! Wait till the $1 stores get it!! ABSOLUTELY IGNORANT--not only that UNBELIEVEABLE!! Watch it for yourself and you will see--BOO!!
I just wonder how much was this film to produce! I bet a penny maybe even 25 cents. I wouldn't give you a dime for it!!
