5.0 out of 5 stars The Future Direction of G.G. Allin, September 30, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Carnival of Excess (Audio CD)
This is absolutely on of the best G.G. Allin recordings of all time! Actually, there are only seven tracks, and another three raw cuts thrown on to make ten, but, still, this CD just wrecks me.

I would especially note the first two songs, "Outskirts of Life" and "Guns Bottles Bitches and Brawls." This is what old-time country music almost approached, and what current country music has forgotten. Being on the outside, drinking, fighting, having no money, loving every minute of it, and no sign of repentance. Surely, if G.G. had not died, this is the direction his music would have taken.

This CD also contains "light" versions of "Snakeman's Dance" and "Watch Me Kill the Boston Girl," which are really interesting if you are familiar with the razor-wire performances available on the CD "You Give Love a Bad Name."

I found this CD an extreme revelation. G.G. never fails to awe me with everything he does.

5.0 out of 5 stars GG's joint best album & the blueprint for Outlaw Country!!, August 21, 2008
This review is from: Carnival of Excess (Audio CD)
Interested in Hank Williams III and the modern-day "Outlaw Country" movement? This album is where it began - the first amalgamation of genuine punk rock attitude with genuine country music - and one that remains unsurpassed to this day. After years of DIY recordings in someone's garage with a beat-up old tape player & a few bottles of Beam, GG actually went into the studio for this one - and it shows. And he is actually SINGING again (arguably the first time since his other best album - Always Was, Is and Always Shall Be - recorded with the Jabbers). GG's lyrics (composed in prison) also show him at the top of his game, with the trademark obscenities at a minimum, but without losing any of his trademark directness & rage. Originally released in '92 by Vinyl Retentive, this re-release is from the fellas who put out the original, on their new label, Ponk Media. One of Hank III's all-time faves (for what it's worth), this is highly recommended to all punk, country & GG Allin fans. You won't be disappointed. Five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good lesson to all addicts, January 27, 2011
This is by far my favorite GG album. While I am a fan of his lawless attitude and ability to do what he wanted instead of what approved of in society, I do not approve of anyone hurting other people. If you want to ruin yourself have at it, hurt yourself, show the world your pain, express your hate for someone or anyone, I can appreciate that. about this album, I love it! Lots of his other albums I can't listen to because I hate listening to garbage recordings. All of which were recorded while obviously in the deep days of endless drug abuse. This album was recorded shortly after a stint in prison and before the drugs ruined his talents once again. I don't remember what album had a phone interview with GG while he was locked up one time and he sounded great. I would have never guessed that was him on the phone. I am a recovering drug addict and know how stark the differences are between being deep in addiction with not a day to let our brain heal and the toxins wasting us away on the inside, and a clear thinking mind. Just one week off the dope is a totally different world. All of which shows on this album.

If you are looking for great music filled with passion and talent then purchase this album. If you are looking to offend your mother in law when she is visiting get any other album of his, there is a chance this album won't produce that affect. Five stars and lots of love for GG Allen.

On this release GG brings back the bad and dangerous to country music.GG is the perfect person to sing of life's hard times and the low road of sorrow, suffering, drinking and hard living.Stand out track is the cover version of Warren Zevon's 'Carmelita', which in my opinion, is better than the original.Musically it sounds a bit like Hank Williams, Johnny Cash mixed with the truck driving music of Dave Dudley.

5.0 out of 5 stars GG's Alt-Country Album, October 18, 2006
This review is from: Carnival of Excess (Audio CD)
This is my favorite GG Allin album, it's actually the only GG Allin album I still listen to and a must have album for a GG fan.

It's a shame it's so hard to find because even people I know who don't like GG like this album(specifically carmelita). If you wonder what GG's country music sounds like and aren't willing to shell out the cash just watch the documentary Hated to see him sing carmelita in a cheap hotel room (but that may just make you want this album even more because that is how I ended up buying this album). Lyrically this album is light years beyond the content of GG's other albums.

This album sounds nothing like a pop-country album. It sounds more like Johnny Cash or Shotgun Willie by Willie Nelson

Tracklist:
Son of Evil
Guns B------ Brawls and Bottles
Carmelita
Outskirts of Life
F--- Authority
Watch Me Kill
A Snake
GG Speaks about CoE
No Rights
Borrowed Time
Pick Me Up (on your way down)

Sample Lyrics:

livin on the streets
i aint got a dime
people look at me and say i'm livin on borrowed time
everthing i own
isn't worth a dime
spend all my time and money gettin high
i don't really care what people say and do
i live my life by my own set of rules
everything i do
i'm livin just to die
...
i'm livin by myself on the outskirts of life

4.0 out of 5 stars Wow, GG Allin goes Country!, April 9, 2003

Now I cannot claim to be the biggest fan of Country music, though the older stuff is better than more recent country, but GG Allin's country project with the "Criminal Quartet" is not half bad. When GG isn't too wasted to sing, he sings very well. Not like with the Jabbers but the ragged voice GG exhibits at this point because of substance abuse fits suitiably. Songs like F*** Authority, and Son of Evil are standouts here. Its way better than any underproduced noisy wretched mumblings that he was also doing at this point, and its just a novelty to hear twang guitar and female backup vocals to shell out the sound. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the Worst!!, March 25, 2008
This review is from: Carnival of Excess (Audio CD)
GG was nothing more than what he claimed to be... a musical terrorist. This album showed there may have been some untapped talent no one knew about... including GG himself. The tracks on the album are rough, but not as bad as his other work. With some great songwriting and a decent cover of Zevon's Carmelita, this one should shock everyone! His true fans get to see a talented, almost softer side of GG. And people who hated him, well... they still hate him but may be able to respect him after this. I listen to it over and over again and will never get sick of it, especially Outskirts of Life.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Of GG ALLIN!, March 13, 2008
This review is from: Carnival of Excess (Audio CD)
This CD has been long awaited and it definetly lives up to the hipe! It has about 12 tracks and each one is well written and thought out. It has some great back up vocals and great guitar. It has about 2-3 tracks on it that GG wrote with the Murder Junkies, but they are much better quality on this CD. It is for sure one of the best GG albums and I am very pleased with it.
