Inside the new Galactic album YA-KA-MAY

Biography

New Orleans is a city defined by its unique and colorful history. It's for that reason that most tend to view the place as something of a musical museum while ignoring the town's vibrant and innovative new music. In New Orleans, the hip-hop at the heart of today's culture emerged from an energetic, highly eroticized and occasionally gender-bending music called "bounce". ... Editorial Reviews

Galactic was formed eighteen years ago in New Orleans; the band cut their teeth playing the biggest party in America, Mardi Gras, when the town shuts completely down to celebrate. Carnivale Electricos is the sound of that party, and much more. It s a carnival record that evokes the primal, electric atmosphere of a whole city vibrating together to one beat, in a seismic wave that runs from New Orleans down through the Caribbean to the southern hemisphere and the mighty megacarnivals of Brazil.

It's carnival time and everybody's having fun!
Dan
It combines their traditional, funky, New Orleans sound with the more alternative sound that can be found on their previous album, From The Corner To The Block.

Seriously, if you've never listened to Galactic before you should definitely check out this album.

Formed 18 years ago, Galactic is New Orleans' number one party band and an unabashed fan of the city's music and culture. Some older fans aren't happy with the band straying a bit from their funk sound and ditching a vocalist in favor of collaborators representing the best the city has to offer. "From The Corner To The Block" to "Carnivale Electricos" proves that the band is not willing to rest on their laurels and continues to mine new territory and grow and change. Some people don't like change. I become a bigger fan with each and every album. "Carnivale Electricos" is the band's first album dedicated to the carnival phenomenon that grips the streets of Rio De Janeiro and New Orleans. Guests on the record include the original vocalist for "Carnivale Time", Al "Carnival Time" Johnson, Mardi Gras Indian War Chief Juan Pardo, Mystikal, Mannie Fresh, Cyril and Ivan Neville and David Shaw of The Revivalists, just to name a few. The album smokes, the musicians are killer, grab yourself one and crank it up!

Carnivale Electricose is a great addition to the Galactic collection any true fan has. This album embodies all characteristics of the distinctive style Galactic encompasses. It combines their traditional, funky, New Orleans sound with the more alternative sound that can be found on their previous album, From The Corner To The Block. Each guest artist, such as Cyril AND Ivan Neville, Mystikal, Mannie Fresh, etc., have brought their own elements and techniques, making a sound that lives up to Galactic's unique style. Whether you are jammin' in the car or out on the town, this album is a must have!!

Yet another string studio album from Galactic. This time they are fusing their patented New Orleans Funk with the sounds of Brasil, and it is kick-ass! Simultaneously mixing New Orleans' Mardi Gras musical traditions and sound with the sound and tradition of Carnival, the music on this album is a great listen and very dance-able. I saw Galactic live shortly after buying this album and it was one of the best Galactic shows I've ever seen! As usual, kick-ass songs created in the studio are only that much better and give more energy when performed live. Galactic still has it!!!

I really like this album because it is so varied. Pretty much every genre is represented and interpreted in a Galactic kind of way!

This album is basically a musical tour of New Orleans; a survey of prominent musical styles from the city, with electronic beats woven in throughout. It opens with Mardi Gras Indans and closes with a Galactic-only instrumental, in between is a series of guests, each bringing something wildly different to the table. There's a zydeco element, a funky Neville brothers bit, and some Brazilian dance beats. Mystikal is back to back with a genuine New Orleans high school marching band (where else would that happen?). Given hotel rates around Mardi Gras time, it's a lot cheaper to buy this album than see this stuff in person. Of course, the album doesn't compare. But it's a really entertaining listen nonetheless.

I have always been a fan of galactic and this album didn't change my opinion at all. They always keep their music straight funky and a CD doesn't even do them justice with how good they are. You really have to catch them live at a show to really capture their energy and how sick they are. I would highly recommend you buying this cd because you will not be upset. They keep it funkier then ever and everyone would enjoy. It just makes you wanna get up and dance.

Don't know Galactic but like Mardi Gras music? This isn't traditional Carnival music (well, one song, maybe) but this is very hip music, very New Orleans. Dig the samba beat in Magalenha. Impress your friends with modern Mardi Gras music. Hurry up, Carnival is underway.

On any given Galactic album, I seem to LOVE 75% of the songs and routinely skip the other 25%. Which still makes any Galactic album well worth the price, because the songs I love stay in my playlist for years. The songs that I love are a riotous, joyful celebration of the music and spirit of New Orleans. "Ash Wednesday Sunrise" is a wonderful exploration of post-carnival soulfulness. "Karate" layers a marching band into the already full and deep complexity of Galactic's sound. "Move Fast" is a fast-spitting rap by Mystikal with a deep Galactic groove. Galactic is one of those rare groups for which I become a missionary, always playing it for friends and trying to bring in new converts.
