Very, very secure packaging, very healthy plant.

Most of the little pitchers were dead except a little green near the base.

It hasn't seemed to grow much, but it doesn't seem to be dying either.

The plant I got was larger than what I expected! Usually carnivorous plants I order are sent as tiny seedlings; this was large enough that after a week or so I felt I could feed it, I put a cricket in one of the pitchers and now there are new ones sprouting like mad! Some of the new pitchers are already longer than the originals; this is a wonderful buy for anyone even mildly interested in carnivorous plants.

Just recieved my plant, and I am 100% satisfied! The plant is healthy (beautiful veining), was well packaged, and came with detailed growing instructions. Would not hesitate for a second to order from Hirt's again.

I ordered two of the Purple Pitchers and they arrived very quickly and in excellent condition. After only a couple of weeks they are growing new pitchers. The color of the plant is amazing with the contrasting veins and dark red color of the pitchers. I would recommend the purchase of a good book about growing carnivorous plants to help with any questions you may have but more importantly to make sure you are growing the plant properly. Excellent service and merchandise from Hirt's.

I had previously ordered a dwarf pomegranate tree and a venus fly trap from Hirts and was quite pleased with their shipping methods; both plants arrived unharmed and looking beautiful.

The purple pitcher plant, on the other hand, did not arrive in such nice condition. The plant itself was neatly packed away in a plastic package, surrounded by packing peanuts to keep everything together. However, all their careful packaging was negated by the fact that the plant was ultimately put in the shipping box on its side!!! When the plant arrived many of the pitchers were completely dead (brown and crispy), and the packing peanuts had sort of melded onto the plant (most likely from the liquid spilling out of the pitchers and soaking the styrofoam, which then dried onto the plant). I had to end up cutting off much of the plant, including the largest pitcher, which was probably beautiful before it was shipped.

I've had the plant for a little over a week now and it's looking okay. It hasn't seemed to grow much, but it doesn't seem to be dying either. Aside from the shipping issues, it's quite a nice little plant. The colors are vibrant and pleasant to look at. I would give the purple pitcher plant itself 5 stars.

I read so many positive reviews, I figured this was a safe purchase. On the positive side, the plant was bigger than I expected, with one stalk measuring about 5" from soil to its top. The pot was exactly as I expected, small, ceramic, cheap but decent.

Now on to the negatives. The packaging was very poor. The pot was wrapped loosely in plastic wrap to keep the soil from spilling out. The plant itself had no protective coverings whatsoever. The plant was placed in a small box, then covered in Styrofoam packaging. That's it. A pot with some plastic wrap, and a lot of Styrofoam. Several of the stalks are completely wilted and brown, one of the stalks has cobwebs all inside it, one of the stalks has dark spots all over it (not sure if that is normal or not, but it looks diseased), and only one stalk, the 5" one, looks somewhat healthy. The biggest negative of them all, no instructions were provided! Nothing, not even a hand written note letting me know what the heck to do with this thing. Do I give it water? Do I feed it immediately? Do I put it in direct sunlight?

Well, guess I'm going to have to do a couple of internet searches to figure out how to take care of this thing.

The plant was just as described, just a little smaller than expected. The shipping was extremely fast. The packaging was pathetic. The flower was in a small plastic flower pot(ok)but the pot was put in a small plastic dixie cup taped together with masking tape. When I received the package and opened it up, the pot was turned sideways inside the popcorn packing and was out of its pot upside down in the dixie cup. The plant itself had several brown pitcher leaves. I had noticed others had the same problem and thought it was isolated to them, but it wasn't. Packaging of the product needs to be totally rethought!!!!!

I recently bought a purple pitcher plant from Hirt's Gardens about 2 weeks ago. The plant arrived quickly and in excellent condition. This is a unique and effective carnivorous plant that can be grown indoors or outdoors. When the plant arrived, it was larger than I expected. After a week, I put a fly in the largest pitcher and some of the smaller ones are already growing.

This is by far the easiest carnivorous plant to grow, great for beginners such as myself. However, a certain amount of research must be made for effectiveness of growth. When I received my plant, there were 3 pitchers over 2 inches long! The pitchers have a unique red and purple color, and the contrast of veins are simply incredible. I often find myself admiring the plant's beautiful features.

Even indoors, this plant caught several insects on it's own. I would recommend this plant to anyone bothered by insects, or mildly interested in carnivorous plants in general. I was extremely impressed with this purchase, and would not hesitate to order from Hirt's Gardens again.
