Book Description

September 1, 1997 Cadogan Chess Books
In this book, International Master Byron Jacobs explains the basic elements, strategies, and tactics of the Advance variation of the Caro-Kann Defense. Although this variation has always been popular with competitive players, it has lately received revived attention following its recent adoption by Vishy Anand, Alexei Shirov, and Veselin Topalov, who have used it to win several brilliant games. Inspired by their example, several other leading players have added the variation to their repertoires, and it is now perhaps the most fashionable way of meeting the Caro-Kann at all levels of play.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

The Advance variation of the Caro-Kann (1 e4 c6 d4 d5 3 e5) is a highly aggressive method of countering one of Black's most solid defenses. White immediately seizes ground in the center and lays the basis of a middlegame attack. Over the past few years Alexei Shirov, Nigel Short, Veselin Topalov and Gata Kamsky have made major contribution to update the theory of this variation and their example has inspired thousands of club and tournament plyaers to adopt it into their own repertoires. In this book, International Master Byron Jacobs explains the strategy and tactics of this highly fashionable variation. Through the use of model games for both sides, the author provides a thorough grounding in the key ideas, so that readers can quickly and confidently start to use the Advance Caro-Kann in their own games.

3.0 out of 5 stars Book for white side of caro-kann, May 2, 2009
This review is from: Caro-Kann Advance (Paperback)
This book is simply not suited for black players trying to learn how to play the black side of the caro-kann advance. Most of the games it examines end up in white wins.I would have expected more games of how black can win or even draw and instead I saw how white can beat me as a black player.
Of course that can be a little helpful for black players too,as you can learn what to avoid ,but it would have been better to examine the black side,it is after all a book about a black defense named caro-kann.
If you want to learn the white side it is a good book,as it shows you how to use the space advantage that this system offers, with a positional approach and not simply premature king-side attacks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Professional: Well-Organized, Thoughtful Presentation, March 31, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Caro-Kann Advance (Paperback)
A strong example of how an opening guide should be written: strategies for both sides explained, main lines identified, model games annotated, and chapter summaries tying it all together. The author is an International Master and a journalist, so his knowledge is deep and articulately presented. The recommended main line for White is positional (4 Nf3 5 Be2 6 0-0) however move alternatives are explored in many different chapters. For me, the only drawback was my reluctance to study in-depth a variation I rarely get the chance to play since I prefer queen's pawn openings!
