Volume 11 has a legendary star & two semi-regulars, June 18, 2009
This review is from: The Carol Burnett Show - The Collectors Edition Vol. 11 (DVD)
Volume 11 features the guest appearance of the legendary Gloria Swanson (whom Carol has done many a "Sunset Boulevard" sketch on). They even compare Carol's version against Gloria's original in clips. There's another "domestic" sketch as the elevator boy falls for Carol. An "Old Folks" sketch with Carol & Harvey goes for verbal humor in contrast to Tim Conway's physical-comedy heavy "Oldest Man" version (unfortunately, Tim is in neither show here). The real highlight is the climactic number. Carol reprises her "cleaning lady" bit as she watches an old silent movie with Swanson doing a wistful Chaplin impersonation. More poignant than funny.
Show #2 has two "semi-regular" guests--Steve Lawrence & Paul Sand--doing their thing in sketches. The show kicks off with Carol turning in a hysterical broad comedy performance as a grotesquely obese woman exercising to a Jack LaLane-type TV personality (a high-pitched, nasally-voiced Lyle Waggoner, again proving he's more than just a handsome leading man figure). Carol & Paul play a couple reacting to pregnancy in a hysterical way. Then, there's the highlight: "The Late, Late, Late Show" movie parody. This time, it pokes fun at private eye melodramas (I think they're spoofing "Double Indemnity") with a typically versatile Lawrence as an insurance man plotting with a floosy blond (Carol, in character & hilarious as usual) to murder her husband (Harvey as a schmuck of a husband) for his wealthy policy. Even Vicki Lawrence is terrific here in the role of a neglected but very "vocal" step-daughter.
The reason why I gave these shows only 4 stars is that they seem to be mediocre in content, and the guest stars seem oddly underused (particulary Sand). And unlike the previous volumes, there is no commentary from Carol, Harvey & Tim!
