Vol. 26 has a comedy "King"...and Van Dyke, too!, October 7, 2009
This review is from: The Carol Burnett Show - The Collector's Edition / Vol 26 (DVD)
From December, 1976: Show #1 has the salty/cheeky presence (and cigar) of the late comedian Alan King as guest. Included: A husband (Tim) tries (unsuccessfully) to make breakfast without disturbing his exhausted wife (Carol) & sleeping baby; Alan does a scathing stand-up routine about the airline industry, then joins Carol for a musical-comedy bit; a psychiatrist's (Alan) personal problems make a patient's (Carol) session even loonier; and the second half of the show is a musical-comedy salute to the classic films of Warner Bros.
From November, 1977: Show #2 is a "family" show (no guests). Being early in the eleventh & final season, it has regulars Vicki, Tim, and the wonderful Dick Van Dyke filling in the spot vacated by Harvey Korman (after 10 great years). Included: Dog owners (Dick, Vicki, Tim) bring their variable-sized pets to K-9 Obedience School in an imaginative & funny pantomime sketch (Dick's physical comedy is the standout here); Dick plays a clown whose mirror reflection (Carol) joins him for song & dance; an insurance inspector (Carol) investigating frequent malpractice suits at a hospital, becomes victimized by the head doctor's (Tim) unusual care methods; a "late late late show" movie parody: "The Enchanted Halot", in which two homely people (Carol, Dick) find love & beauty in a magical cottage (the "ugly" make-up job on Carol is something else!); and a musical-comedy finale has Carol reminiscing about her childhood "funnies".
There's a mix of strong & weak comedy in both shows; but being the Burnett Show, it's still worth the watch!
