A funny woman and a showman on Volume 19,

This review is from: The Carol Burnett Show - The Collector's Edition / Vol 19 (DVD)
This volume has two great shows, thanks to the two terrific guests appearing. The funny & talented Madeline Kahn--who already racked up many great comedy roles in "What's Up, Doc?", "Paper Moon", "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein"--is the guest on Show #1 (1976). She appears in another "family" sketch as an actress coaching stage-struck Eunice (Carol) for a local play. Of course, things go awry as Eunice gets increasingly criticized for her acting by Kahn..and Ed & Mama (Harvey, Vicki) get praised! There's an in-between musical bit as Carol & Madeline sing about their friendship. The real highlight is the big finale spoofing "That's Entertainment" (here, it's called "That's Entertainment, part 86!!"). Funny old "movie clips" of the performers are first shown--then the finale concludes with those same performers now, showing what Father Time has done to them (Carol does a hilarious send-up of Esther Williams).Show #2 (1977) has the charismatic showman Ben Vereen (fresh from his T.V. triumph in the miniseries "Roots"). The first sketch has Tim trying to put together a eulogy for his old army friend--who is revealed to have been "more than friends" with Tim's wife (Carol). A musical fantasy number has two children lost in a forest, with Vereen singing a song to "believe in themselves". A cafeteria sketch has a feuding couple (Carol, Harvey) sharing a table with a divorce lawyer (Vereen) who is reluctantly forced to intervene. An unusual out-of-office Wiggins/Tudball sketch have an exasperated Mr. Tudball (Tim) trying to get coffee from a malfunctioning vending machine..along with a security man (Harvey) threatening to wring his neck for abusing the machine. But it's Mrs. Wiggins (Carol) who gets the last laugh when she wanders into the lobby & swipes Tudball's long-awaited cup of coffee out from under his nose! Another chapter of the cornball soap "As The Stomach Turns" has Tim's "oldest man" character as a life insurance inspector, Harvey in outrageous "yentl-Mom" drag, and Vicki returning from oblivion (again) as Carol's "bionic daughter". The show's musical finale has Carol & Ben paying tribute to a great composer. The rare Burnett Show appearances of both Vereen & Kahn (the latter being, in my opinion, one of the funniest women ever to grace the big screen) make this volume a must!
