5.0 out of 5 stars Great concert! I still love her music!, November 23, 2003
By
This review is from: Carole King - In Concert (DVD)
If you haven't heard any of Carole's music since Tapestry, hold on to your hat. Her style has evolved, but not unrecognizably so. And her wonderful voice and talent are the same.

The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio quality is quite good. The visual quality is high enough to watch at a widescreen setting with only a tiny loss of sharpness. Each song is a chapter, so you can easily go to a particular song. My only criticism is that the dvd is very dark in places. I would have preferred softer lighting on the stage with fewer spotlights and shadows.

I loved seeing Carole at the piano for several songs during this concert. That's the Carole that I remember. But how fun it is to see Carole facing the audience, singing, dancing, and inviting them to join in on a chorus of one of the old favorites. This is a must-see for any Carole King fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars She Still Rocks!, July 9, 2001

This review is from: Carole King - In Concert (DVD)
This "Carole King-In Concert" DVD was filmed in 1994, as part of her "Colour of Your Dreams" album tour. While it is, she says of one portion, part memory lane trip, part music history, it is very much a rousing in-the-moment concert with none of the mustiness of an oldies or comeback gig to it (though this particular video has all the pedigree of a PBS fundraiser concert, filmed in an upscale concert hall, with a very well manicured, polite, not-very-diverse boomer audience). Working since the late fifties, King has written much of the music that helped define pop culture ever since, mostly by other performers. Here are "Natural Woman," "Chains," "One Fine Day," "Take Good Care of My Baby," as well as some she debuted on her own "Tapestry" album. (I thought it odd at first that "Tapestry" itself was not on this DVD, but I can see where it really doesn't fit so logically with the rest of the selections.) The music rocks. So does King, who looks wonderful and is a role model for aging gracefully (if almost invisibly!). Her voice is strong and rich. DVD options are not availed much in this product, though they are used to outline the highlights of an extraordinary, award-winning and often behind-the-scenes career.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carole King At Her Best!!, March 19, 2005

I've been a Carole King fan since the 60's. Finally I bought this DVD and my only complaint is that it is not longer.
Carole is in fine form, singing most of her hits which form just a small part of her compositions. Her performance generates an enthusiasm that is contagious. The orchestra is in top form.
I can't wait for another performance by Carole to come out!

My previous relationship with CK was her hit album Tapestry. This DVD is very much enjoyable. This 1994 concert has all her hits with an excellent band and great concert hall. The video is top quality and it would become a real jewel if ever released in DTS. TOO BAD no surround sound on this work of art.

5.0 out of 5 stars AND THE HITS KEEP COMING AND COMING..., August 7, 2000

the eveready bunny has nothing on Carole King....and this concert not only contains hit after hit..but it is lit and photographed beautifully as well! The pace of the show is a real rollercoaster of time and emotion...I actually forgot how much I loved her music...glad to have a digital refresher course available...If you want to hear one of the half dozen greatest pop composers of the last forty years perform her songs as only she can...you will not be dissapointed. PS her band cooks!

This CD was great! It featured many of Carole King's greatest songs. My only negative comment would be that it didn't include ALL of Ms. King's hits from Tapestry. For example if you are a fan of "Way Over Yonder", you won't find it on this DVD. However, all fans of Carole King's should find that this DVD is very enjoyable.

Be ready for nearly two hours of fun that's full of energy. This event was a well produced PBS fund raiser. Fortunately on DVD and 5.1 surround sound (as opposed to the initial broadcast) the viewer becomes one of the audience for a true legend of the 1960's & 70's and is still pouring her heart into every lyric and note thus delivering it like a fine aged wine....

There is something special about watching this concert and watching Carole King perform songs many of which are the soundtrack of my life. As I was growing up the songs she wrote with Gerry Goffin were all over the radio. She puts everything she has into the performance and there are no gimicks, it's all about the music. Incredible energy yet Carole never seems to break a sweat. I'm in awe of her songwriting ability, how she can create words and music that can lift you up or get right to your soul. She does it all so modestly and with such class. I would say this 1994 concert shows Carole at the top of her form but then I haven't seen her in concert lately! Just think of it 1994 was 23 years after her mega LP Tapestry and 34 years after she started writing songs. She nails every note in the music with ease!

I would have liked it better if she had talked a little more about the music or whatever but that's just me. It's a great concert and a welcome addition to my video library.

As an Israeli, I never had the opportunity to see Carol King performs, and this DVD made a real surprise. Is this a 55-year-old lady? She looks and sounds great.
The show is a great party. Most of the beloved classics are there. Worth buying!

I'm not a real Carole King fan (although plenty old enough to know about the multi-Grammy winner from the start), but decided to give this 1993 concert a watch based on the strength of the other Amazon reviews. Whoa!

I expected to see a middle-aged woman crooning a medley of ballads while sitting at a piano - with a worn out voice and attitude. No way!! King is arguably "smokin' hot" in a mini-dress, and is all over the place. To add to the energy, guitar icon, Slash, stands-in on a couple of tunes and just sets the place on fire (imagine an acid electric lead guitar duel during "Locomotion"). In addition, the entire concert band talent is five star -- sax, keyboards, guitar, percussion.

If you don't already know it, you'll learn from watching the concert that Carole King was a MAJOR 60's/70's songwriter. I had forgotten how prolific she was. Her music was picked up by everybody from James Taylor to early Motown R&R to The Beatles. Her voice is better than ever (at the time of this filming), and her stage performance is unsurpassed. For a genuine superstar that's been around a while, she, in an unusually genuine way, seems to be just loving the whole experience.

A wonderful recorded concert. Recommended for about anybody.
