The first and second books in this series were great, but I've been waiting for Luke to come home and was not disappointed.

When his high school sweetheart dumped him and left town, Luke Fletcher was sure he'd never hear from her again. When family attorney Kate Dolan tracked him down in Afghanistan ten years later, the Marine Staff Sergeant was shocked to discover not only that his former girlfriend had died but that she had left him custody of her ten year old daughter, Taylor. Their daughter. A child he hadn't known existed. Taylor has been living with Luke's parents for the past four months while Luke finished his tour of duty in Afghanistan. Now he's home on leave, trying to get to know this prickly, quiet daughter who is now his responsibility; determined to do the right thing but not quite sure how. Then there's his daughter's attorney, a buttoned-up woman who holds everyone at a distance but sets off sparks in Luke that he'd be happy to explore.

Hardworking attorney Kate Dolan has dedicated her life to helping women and children in difficult situations. Because Kate is Executor of Taylor's mother's estate but mostly because the dead woman was Kate's employee and friend, she is determined to see that Taylor is placed with the right people. Based on her own experiences as the daughter of a Marine, Kate is initially not certain Luke Fletcher is the best person for that role. She thinks she knows what to expect when Luke returns from Afghanistan but the reality is vastly different from her expectations. Instead of the harsh, controlling, short-tempered man she expects, she finds him to be caring, funny, honorable...and desirable. Oh, so desirable. But while Kate may be willing to indulge in a mutually satisfying affair, she has tall walls around her heart and no idea how to be part of a close, loving family like the Fletchers.

I rarely ever say anything is the best, but I am telling you, Carolina Man by Virginia Kantra is one of the best. Marine Luke Fletcher, the baby of the Fletcher family of Dare Island, finds himself an unexpected father and is home on leave and plans to get to know his ten year old daughter Taylor. He is aided by his late girlfriend’s employer, the lawyer Kate Dolan, fiercely self-possessed, strong, yet with an air of fragility that is both a challenge and a mystery to Luke. What follows is a spectacular story of Luke finding that place to put all of his steadfast and hyper-focused will – it is of Kate learning to trust her heart, and Taylor gaining her very own family (pets and all!). Virginia Kantra has written a beautiful, sexy, and heartwarming book. From start to finish (I finished it in one sitting!) this book is perfect. It’s a thoughtful, charming, engaging, and beautiful read. I cannot wait for my next trip to Dare Island!

Marine, Luke Fletcher of the heartwarming Fletcher family of Dare Island, is notified overseas that he has a daughter, Taylor, age 10. Shocked at being a father, he pulls himself up by the bootstraps and does what he does best, the responsible thing. Kate Dolan, an attorney tries to make sure all goes well for Taylor, the daughter of her former employee Dawn who has died. Luke is like a ‘duck out of water” in getting to know Taylor and one of the best parts of the book was when he realized he loved her. Luke, Kate and the Fletcher family all are determined to help Taylor feel part of the Fletcher family. Luke and Kate also have a great story of their own, but I’m not telling!

The family love and care was truly shown. Responsibilities came forth. What I didn't care for was the sexual details. I skipped over it. No prude am I. I like to leave room for my own imagination!!
