Review

When one thinks of wine countries, visions of Italy, France, or California generally come to mind. But in Carolina Wine Country, The Complete Guide, author Pamela Watson uncorks a new world for wine lovers by providing an in-depth look at the surprising number of vineyards and wineries in North and South Carolina.....

Carolina Wine Country is the perfect book for wine lovers seeking interesting day trips or for the connoisseur who prefers reading about wonderful places while sipping Chardonnay on the back porch. -- Amy Wood, Our State, down home in North Carolina, March 1999

From the Author

I traveled more than 5000 miles touring the Carolina Wine Country, through misty mountains, over rolling Piedmont, to windswept beaches, and I never left the Carolinas. Along the way I met fascinating people, each with a unique story to tell about growing grapes and making wine. Of course, I also tasted lots of wine. It comes with the job, and I can tell you that there is some wonderful wine to found in some out of the way places.

The North Carolina Grape Council calls it the "Variety Vineland" and it truly is. From the mountains to the sea, from Sir Walter Raleigh's explorers to today's vintners, the Carolina Wine Country is diverse, fascinating and just plain fun. I had a marvelous time and I can't wait to go again.

Format: Paperback
While compiling a listing of North Carolina wineries, I stumbled across Pamela Watson's book in a local library. With the wealth of history on grapes and winemaking in the Tarheel State, I bought an autographed copy for my personal library. I found it perfect for the day tripper, as this paperback fits nicely in a picnic basket or the door map pocket of my van. Extensive interviews with winery owners, lots of history, precise driving directions, wine listings, food pairings, and other sites of interest near each winery (including chambers of commerce, lodging information, and recommendations for local eateries). Well researched and complete for both North and South Carolina and their burgeoning wine industry. Contains telephone numbers, web sites (if available), and suggested winery groupings for day tours. Would that all winery guides be this complete!
