After looking in all the stalls, she and her mother find the perfect gift--a carved walking stick, so Abuelita can accompany them to the market the next time they go. This simple story is a vehicle for introducing Spanish words and showing a marketplace in Peru that the author once visited. Although the pleasant, color-saturated illustrations incorporate textile patterns and clothing reflecting the culture, the market scenes lack the bustle and vibrancy of Ted Lewin's pictures in Market (1996). Back matter includes a map, information on the market, and translations of 10 Spanish words used in the text. The book will be good supplemental material for elementary-level social studies. Use it with Lewin's book and with Leyla Torres' Saturday Sancocho (1995), another South American market story. Julie Cummins

I bought this book for the children of a friend who had spent time in Peru. The story is simple and charming. The illustrations sparkle with colour, character and local culture. I enjoyed the time I spent pouring over the pages and my friend was delighted. This book will give her children their own Peruvial experience.

I just want to say that the thing I loved about this book was the illustrations. I LOVED how so many women were depicted carrying their babies around in various slings. Such a good message wrapped up in a sweet story.
