5.0 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong with a novel by Cynthia Wright July 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Caroline, first in the series of The Beauvisage Novels by Cynthia Wright, introduces the reader to another powerful family and another irrisistible rogue. Alexandre Beauvisage (known as Sacha to his family) is a man's man, hardened by his harrowing experiences as a spy in the Revolutionary War and cynical of the existance of true love because of a betrayal at the hands of a past love. As with most men of this "type," the more he feels for a woman, the harder he tries to push her away.

Then he finds Caroline - literally. Riding through the woods he sees a scrap of color on the ground below the trees. As he approaches, he thinks it's a young boy but quickly sees it is a beautiful woman in disguise. Thrown from her horse she had hit her head and was suffering from amnesia. Unsure of what else to do, he takes her back with him to Philadelphia. Along the way the two grow closer, yet farther apart.

As with all of her novels, this one features a page-turning story, adventure, intrigue, fully developed characters, a likeable and believable heroine, a swoon-worthy hero, historical accuracy, and appearances by "real" people that lived during the period. This particular story works in a connection with General George Washington, a friendship with Benjamin Franklin, and references to other historical figures that are really believable and fun to read. For instance, Caroline admires a lovely silver platter crafted by Paul Revere. Touches like that help bring the setting to life.

The author has done quite a bit of research on both the era and the places mentioned in the book, which adds a depth to the story that you won't often find in this genre. The accuracy makes the story seem even more real, if that's possible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Colonial Romance December 15, 2003
Back in the Seventies, Cynthia Wright was one of the biggest names in historical romance. Her warm, adventurous, loving stories matched Rosemary Rogers or Kathleen Woodiwiss in sensuality, but had a wholesome sweetness and zest all their own.
This debut novel is really special. Caroline is a golden-haired beauty who awakens one morning in the Connecticut countryside to realize that she has no memory of her past life. Along comes darkly handsome, deliciously commanding Alec Beauvisage, a French born rake who has just finished a very distinguished career in George Washington's Continental Army. With the war over, Alec is ready for a new adventure, and helping a most winsome damsel in distress is just what the doctor ordered!
Not only does Caroline recapture her true identity, she also captures the heart of this extraordinary man. CAROLINE was the first novel by a tremendous talent. Much more was to follow!

5.0 out of 5 stars Oooohhhh Sasha! July 24, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read this book as a teen in the early 1980's & fell in love with the book. Actually, I fell in love with all of Cynthia Wright's novels. So when I found out it came out on Kindle, I just had to buy it and give it a re-read. I fell in love with Alec aka Sasha Beauvisage all over again, cynical roué that he is! Caroline is a sweet love story of a honey-eyed gamine who tames a certified rake and Gallic male crankiness ensues! I love that I now have it on my Kindle & I can keep the story with me always! I hope to see many new stories come to life from such a wonderful author!

What went wrong?!? This is an exciting looking plot set in post-revolutionary America and includes various famous figures of the times! I was really looking forward to this book, and in fact the whole series! Unfortunately, when I just cannot connect with either of the main characters, even a storyline with great potential set in an era that is exciting fails to get me involved. I very much doubt now that I will pick up another in this set. I notice that the five star reviews are from readers who fell in love with the book long ago while this is the first time I've heard of it. Still, I can't imagine what makes anyone attatched to Alec and Caroline.
Alec is the kind of guy who finds somebody injured and unconcious in the woods and instead of checking the massive head wound (as you would expect a seasoned soldier with the smallest bit of concience to do) begins groping and fondling the the knocked out woman he's found. From there he is kind for about a day, and then proceeds to basically rape her. Alec's behavior just continues down hill. Worse, his character is inconsistent. You would never guess from his behavior around others (ie his political conversations, the treatment of his family, the way he took care of friends during the war) that he would treat an injured young girl so horribly.
Caroline is no better--in fact I may like her even less. This girl, who acts about 12 in every single situation, is a whiny little ingrate who has zero self-reflection and absolutely no concern for anyone but herself. She wakes up with nothing and no memory of anything, and when Alec agrees to take her to his family (who are extremely wealthy and well connected) where she will be accepted as one of them, she acts like this is a big inconvenience because she won't be with him in his house.

5.0 out of 5 stars you'll fall in love! March 26, 2012

I have now read every book by Cynthia Wright...and I only discovered her a month ago! I find myself devouring the books, and each hero & heroine hold a place in my heart! I can only hope she comes out with a new series soon! I LOVE the way she combines my 2 passions, history and romance! Historical figures come alive, although true to the spirit of their characters, and historical events are accurately portrayed. *******applause*******

More About the Author

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cynthia Wright is happy to announce that "Rakes & Rebels" unites the intertwining Raveneau and Beauvisage family novels into one captivating 9-book series, set in both America and England!

A writer since childhood, Cynthia spent 8th grade typing a sequel to GONE WITH THE WIND, quickly getting Rhett and Scarlett together again! At 21, she penned CAROLINE, set in 1783 at the end of the Revolutionary War, and it not only became a bestseller for Ballantine Books, but also won a place on keeper shelves around the world. Cynthia went on to write 13 more bestselling historical romances set in Colonial America, Regency England, Renaissance England & France, and the American West. Her latest, published in 2013 and 2014, are TEMPEST and SMUGGLER'S MOON.

Although Cynthia's novels have garnered many awards over the years, what means most to her are readers' messages like this one: "When I read your books, I can't wait to turn the page... but I never want the story to end!"

Cynthia lives in northern California with her husband, two dogs, and one cat, in a 1930's Spanish cottage. When she and her husband aren't riding their tandem road bike or traveling in their Airstream, she loves spending time with family, especially her two young grandsons. She is at work on a new novel, ALWAYS HIS, which will appear as Rakes & Rebels, Book 6.
