Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I loved imagining the plot for this book! Caroline and Mama travel into enemy territory, hoping to pass important information to Papa. I knew I wanted Caroline to take a key role in that dangerous adventure--but how? What could a girl of that time and place realistically do that could make a difference? The answer came not from reading, but from examing a special kind of antique made by young girls during that era.

This second book in the Caroline Series follows soon after the first battle at Sackets Harbor fought in the first one. Now Caroline and her mother are risking their lives rowing across Lake Ontario into enemy territory. They're taking this dangerous journey to plead for the release of Papa who is being held prisoner in a British fort.

When she is allowed to spend only ten minutes with her father, Caroline shows him her embroidery in which she has stitched an X to mark the places along Lake Ontario that Papa must avoid when he makes his escape. A surprise gift from Papa is delivered to Caroline on her birthday. Although he is still being held prisoner, she vows to hold him in her heart until he comes home.

Another beautiful cover as in the first book, occasional full page, full color illustrations and more frequent smaller drawings help young readers visualize life during the early years of the War of 1812.

I purchased the Caroline Series from Amazon as well as the author's seventh book, TRAITOR IN THE SHIPYARD(for readers a bit older), because I have also written a childrens' book about the War of 1812. I look forward to reading and reviewing the rest of the series.

I homeschool and am teaching my 8 year old about American History. The American Girl series is excellent to use not just for reading, but to also help my daughter get an idea of what life in early America may have been like. The characters appear real to her and she reads the book in a day or two, at most. She is always so excited about Caroline's adventures that she has to tell me about it for a couple of days.

I truly enjoy these books for my daughter.

I liked this book because it was lovely and full of detail! Caroline and mama even take a daring adventure to see papa. Will Caroline be able to get papa the information to papa that he needs so he can come home or will Caroline never see papa again? Caroline has her birthday and has a good time. She learned you should enjoy even the small things you have.
