This CD is absolutely beautiful. I can't bear to put it away after the holiday season is over! The voices of the Clare College Singers, accompanied by the orchestra blend together to make a heavenly sound. The songs are so gentle and almost mystical. I discovered John Rutter and the Clare College Singers by listening to the local classical music station, and fell in love with their unique sound. "Shepherds Pipe Carol" is one of my favorites, but all of the songs are wonderful on this CD. I also purchased "The Holly and the Ivy" (also with the Clare choir and John Rutter), and it is beautiful too. 5 stars is not enough. If you enjoy gentle, spiritually uplifting Christmas music, buy this CD. You won't regret it.

This collection first introduced John Rutter to most of us. The recordings were made 30 years ago, when Rutter, in his early 20's, was directing the choir at Clare College. This was a big hit when it was first released on LP. In fact, for the first couple of years, if you didn't buy the LP early in the season, you could forget it. The record store would be sold out

The unique Rutter choral sound was apparent from the first, particularly on his own compositions: Shepherd's Pipe Carol and Nativity Carol. Now, many years and several recordings later, Rutter's work has lost none of its beauty or appeal.

I was delighted to find "Carols from Clare" which includes 11 of the 12 recordings of my Capitol International Series LP recording , "Christmas in Cambridge, " featuring the Clare College Singers and Orchestra, Rutter as arranger.NEVER THOUGHT I'D FIND !!! It has been my FAVORITE Christmas holiday recording for 19 years. Only piece missing is "Of the Father's Love Begotten" which I will be searching for, of course, on another Rutter CD.

When this beautiful choral music of the holidays fills your home, it will fill you with the most traditional and peaceful holiday feelings. Directed by John Rutter, the premiere choral director and musical arranger from Cambridge, England, the music will become to you the epitome of the christmas season. The music is old English, traditional, religious songs that help to support the truest meanings of christmas. Please give it a try. You will love it.

I have had this CD for 3 years and I'm still not tired of it. I agree fully with the previous review. If there's only one CD you purchase this year and you like Choral music, this is the one for you! Another one of Rutter's I highly recommend, but is only available through collectors as it's been discontinued, is "Christmas from Clare". If you can get your hands on this rare commodity, do it!

Here again is a Christmas collection from Clare College that will easily find its way to the top of your list. The mixed male and female choir is accompanied by an orchestra whose excellence is manifest in it perfect coordination with the voices throughout. All the arrangements capture your soul and bring you into a dimension of Christmas not found elsewhere. If giving this as a gift, make sure to buy one also for yourself!

I fell in love with John Rutter's music when I heard his "Magnificat" performed locally. I by chance heard the first selection on this cd- one of two he wrote himself- and bought it just based on that one tune. I am of the mind that you can't own enough Christmas music because you'll want variety. This cd, and others from the Clare or Cambridge collection, is not about "Mama kissing Santa" or a red-nosed reindeer. It's about the magic of Christmas and the reason we have celebrate a birth in a manger. Of course like any great sacred music, even athiests will love the beauty of it!

This is my favorite Christmas CD of all. I grew up with these recordings of carols back in the early 70's, in the UK when they were actually on a few different LP's. The arrangements and singing are sublime. John Rutter is a Master at his craft. Recorded back in the late 60's the recordings still sound great, helped by the wonderful acoustics of the Lady Chapel at Ely Cathedral.

John Rutter's is my favorite music for Christmas. For me, this CD is the most beautiful rendition ever of his music. I highly recommend this and his other CD's to lift your spirts and bring peace to your heart and home at Christmas. Jean in DE

I got this recording on tape many years ago. I have been gradually replacing my old vinyl and tape recordings with CDs. This year I got this CD and I am happy that I did. As usual, Amazon's price cannot be beaten. I am a huge fan of John Rutter and his Christmas choral music. If you are, too, then you will not regret adding this CD to our collection.
