Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3–Madam Fortune and The World's Strongest Tattooed Man work in the Pavilion O' Fun where Dan, in the company of a stray cat, runs the carousel. Every morning, the friends share their own private ride before the establishment opens for the day. Readers will spot what Dan can't figure out–how the feline is always the first to arrive. When a new amusement park takes all the business away, the owner of the Pavilion is forced to shut down. The cat, too, vanishes, only to reappear when she bravely rescues her kittens from a fire, reuniting the friends for one last carousel ride. Blake's ink-and-watercolor paintings, many orange-bordered and superimposed on drawings that recall a bygone era, or drawings that complete the painted scene, evoke sharply contrasting moods: the joy of riding on a marvelous carousel with ornate roof and dome and beautifully carved horses, and the desolation of a litter-strewn boardwalk with boarded-up buildings. This lively and dramatic read-aloud recounts a special friendship and has broad child appeal. Like Kate Banks's The Cat Who Walked across France (Farrar, 2003), it stars a brave feline that accomplishes an amazing feat.–Marianne Saccardi, Norwalk Community College, CT

Format: Hardcover
I checked this book out of the local library for my 5-year-old son, and after the first reading he told me, "I want to buy this book and keep it forever." This is the same child who loves superheroes and Pokemon and Beyblade---he also loves the *idea* of scary things because he thinks it's cool to be a boy who likes scary things, but he is also the same little boy who reminds me regularly that he's scared of "bad guys" when I turn off the lights. Why do I mention this? Because I wondered whether this story would, as many children's books seem to do, take a wrong turn---be so sweet and sappy that it's uninteresting for any kid over 3, or be so desperate to be edgy that it scares any kid under 10. My son loves to read and excitedly checks 10 to 15 books out of the library at a time, but so many are quickly cast aside because they're "too boring" or they give him nightmares.

Instead, we found a story that was a) just the right length for bedtime, b) exciting enough to keep you eagerly turning the pages but not so overstimulating to disrupt sleep, and c) beautifully illustrated with enough details for informal games of I Spy. Yes, it's a great book for cat lovers (which my son and I are), as the other reviewers pointed out. But there's much more to the story than the adventure of a cat; the underlying theme is a wistful look back on the heyday of Asbury Park, New Jersey. You get a little taste of the magic of a bygone era, of the beauty of loyal friends and animal companions, of the heartbreak of a town's economic crisis. As a resident of New Jersey who loves my trips down the shore, days on the boardwalk, and my Bruce Springsteen, I had a hard time finding any fault with this one.

I recommend carouse cat becuase it is about cats and I like cats. I also like the book becuas it is very exsiting. It also has lots of detals.my favorite part was when the cat had kittens and she had 1 more kitten in her mouth but she fell! But the cat fell into one guy's arms and the kitten landed on the strong guy's head!- Josef, aged 7.
