THE definitive book on carousel animals by a master carver, April 27, 2002
This review is from: Carousel Horses: A Photographic Celebration (Hardcover)
Sherrell Anderson, a true master carver in the style of the master carousel creators of the 19th century, has written the one book that can tell you about carousel animals from inside the business. Not a collector or dilettante, he is one of the foremost creators, restorers and overall authorities in the world of carousels. This authoritative book covers carousel history, carving techniques and offers a real inside look at the beauty and wonder of carousel animals. The pictures are incredible, including shots of unique custom-made animals that have never been seen elsewhere. This book is a must for collectors or anyone who loves carousels.

The title is misleading, May 9, 2009
This review is from: Carousel Horses: A Photographic Celebration (Hardcover)
The book title is a bit misleading. This is less a celebration of historic carousel horses than a step-by-step guide on their restoration. Author Sherrell Anderson operates a carousel restoration company, and the book is clearly written from that point of view.
Although there are a few pages devoted to Looff, Dentzel, Carmel, and the other original carvers, each receives less than a page of discussion. On the other hand, 75 pages are devoted to purchasing antique horses on the open market, spotting fakes, and the steps involved in repairing and restoring them. It's as if an introductory text on carousel history was wedded to an expert's guide on proper restoration. This would be fine if the title more accurately described the book's content.
The book itself is attractive, with high-quality glossy pages filled with color photographs. If you're looking for a comprehensive survey of the various carvers and their works, you'll be a much happier camper purchasing "Painted Ponies". However, if you're interested in how these animals are constructed, carved, and restored, "Carousel Horses: A Photographic Celebration" should hit the spot.
