4.0 out of 5 stars Too technical for me but fills a needed market niche, June 23, 2007

This review is from: Carp and Pond Fish Culture: Including Chinese Herbivorous Species, Pike, Tench, Zander, Wels Catfish and Goldfish (Hardcover)
This is a neat book. It has a lot of diagrams and illustrations and is written in a straightforward style. Also, it definitely retains "its Hungarian character," as mentioned in the introduction by Chris Seagrave. Authors Horvath and Tamas (sorry I don't know how to insert accent marks) are or were established experts in this field in Hungary, but their books had not previously been available in English.

This book is written more for someone who is looking to raise carp or related species in a commercial or advanced amateur manner. It is not really for the garden hobbyist unless one is inclined to read more detailed work. I am scanning a few example pages for the amazon image library. I think this is more about fish as a food item than about pretty koi or goldfish.

I would not have purchased this book if I had realized how technical it was, even though it is clearly written and not intimidating or anything.

Here is a summary of the major Table of Contents items:

1. Introduction
Includes a background of carp and cyprinid farming, especially in Europe.

2. The Principles of Carp Farming
Includes information on ecology, fish growth, farming cycles, ponds, etc.

3. The Technology of Seed Production.
This is an intensive chapter about eggs and such (30 pages).

4. The Technology of Fry Rearing
(Fry are baby fish.) Includes pond prep info and feeding, handling and harvesting of fry.

5. The Annual Cycle of Carp Husbandy: Ongrowing Fingerling Fish to Market Size
About ponds, stocking, feeding, health, harvesting, etc.

6. The Propagation of Other Pond Fish Species
Includes subchapters on herbivorous fish, tench, pike, zander, wels catfish and goldfish.

There are nine Appendices and an Index.
