5.0 out of 5 stars The humorous side of motherhood
When you are a parent you can be sure that there will be many important, serious, life-changing situations as you and your child grow together. On the other hand, if you can laugh at your own foibles, there are even more humorous events that occur on an almost daily basis. 1.0 out of 5 stars Not funny at all
Basically Mrs. Gruen has written a collection of essays for stay-at-home mothers about the trials and tribulations of being a stay-at-home mom. It shows life in a family where the kids are ill behaved and in charge of the house. The mother in the book (the author herself) seems to hate being at home and being a mom.

The essays aren't long. But they just don't flow...

5.0 out of 5 stars The humorous side of motherhood, September 6, 2003
When you are a parent you can be sure that there will be many important, serious, life-changing situations as you and your child grow together. On the other hand, if you can laugh at your own foibles, there are even more humorous events that occur on an almost daily basis. Changing your perspective so you can see the humor in everyday life is the forte of author Judy Gruen. In her book "Carpool Tunnel Syndrome" she demonstrates the ability to see humor in life with children and with deftly turns words and phrases on their ear to provide a truly funny look at motherhood. Any mother is sure to immediately recognize the situations she is addressing as she discusses things like "Why your sons play Cain and Abel while your daughters play house", "Travel turbulence", and stretch marks. A book that is hard to put down without picking it up again only minutes later, it is a highly recommended title for any mother looking to have a good laugh at life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Ride!, May 7, 2003

Judy Gruen "knows best." Carpool Tunnel Syndrome is filled with wry observations and vignettes about motherhood and family life that run the gamut from humorous to poignant and strike home. Every few minutes I found myself laughing out loud and saying, "Yes!" If you want a great read, go along for the ride.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carpool Tunnel Syndrome: Motherhood as Shuttle Diplomacy, July 9, 2001

Judy Gruen's book is probably one of the funniest books I have ever read. I laughed myself silly over the chapter "Why Guar Gum is Really a Vegetable", I nodded in agreement over "Stretch Marks: Every Mother's God-Given Right" and easily related to "Be It Ever So Humble". This book is for every woman who has ever experienced morning sickness, endured screaming toddlers in a supermarket and/or have fallen victim to a Stupid Parent Trick by precocious progeny. Judy has been there, done that and written a hilarious book about it. You'll love it!

Being a parent also, I found myself rolling on the floor from laughing so much. A book that's humor is so real in the life of a family. Looking forward to her next book if she does one.

I am over 60 and even though I don't drive a carpool, the few chapters I have already read left me weak, after I laughed harder than I've ever laughed from reading. I highly recommend this book for all ages who want a guaranteed good time. For anyone who has tried to lose weight, chapter 18, "Pyramid Schemes," will have you rolling on the floor.

If you are finding yourself wondering why you didn't practice safe sex, then this book will be a refreshing and humorous break from your role as a mom. The chapter "Very Married" should be read by dads, too.

This is a terrific book!! I laughed as I saw myself in so many of the situations Judy Gruen describes. It's really comforting to know that I am not alone in this!! Her children are so much like my own and her anecdotes about her mother remind me exactly of my mother!! She shows such love and devotion to her family with a wonderfully funny sense of humor and perspective. I plan on giving this book to my friends for the holidays. They will love it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book made me laugh out loud!, October 24, 2000
This review is from: Carpool Tunnel Syndrome: Motherhood As Shuttle Diplomacy (Paperback)
This book really captures the hilarity and absurdity of being a modern Mom. Gruen's observations are wry and funny -- and full of affection for kids. I especially like the fact that there is a serious side to the book -- she obviously takes her job as a mother seriously and is distressed by some of the visual garbage that assaults her kids as they drive around during carpool. As funny as the book is, she also makes some very good points about how to create a more family-friendly environment for us all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Familiarity breeds hilarity, October 21, 2000

This review is from: Carpool Tunnel Syndrome: Motherhood As Shuttle Diplomacy (Paperback)
As a mother of six, I feel as if Judy Gruen is Big Sister watching me. Not only does she vividly describe events and scenes that seemed to emanate from own kichen, (or dining room or backyard or van...), she clearly is gifted with the clairvoyance needed to read my mind.

Each chapter brought more embarrassed chuckles (and a few loud giggles) as I lived through each hilarious episode of "Motherhood as Shuttle Diplomacy". With precious little time in my hectic schedule for reading, it was both pleasant and reassuring to read, that even while surrounded by my husband and children, I am not alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A light-hearted, poignant look at motherhood, April 30, 2003
By A Customer
Judy Gruen is a modern Erma Bombeck. She turns everyday family situations into humorous and truth-filled observations. I found myself simultaneously laughing at the absurdity of the scenarios, yet nodding in all too familiar recognition. Carpool Tunnel Syndrome is a well-written, witty book appropriate for parents of all ages.
