I bought this for my boys, 3 & 5. (I think it's safe to dismiss the 8yr+ suggestion, unless your child has been known to eat electronics.)
The track is HUGE (6' x 3.5') and the cars are much larger than the ones I had as a kid. (and these cars don't emit the smell of burning rubber/electric motors overheating.) The track is sturdy, and has clips that hold them all in place. The cars are VERY fast, and I had to explain to my boys in the beginning that the point of the toy is not to see who can launch their car the furthest when speeding around a corner. It took them a little bit to get used to making 1-lap around without falling off. But, by the end of the day they were both able to do the actual 50-lap race against me or my wife. The only problems that I have with this product are the differences between the 2 vehicles. The Joker Mobile is quite a bit larger and heavier compared to the Batmobile, making it much more difficult to control. Even in appearance, their scaling looks disproportionate. Also, the Batmobile has headlights that light up, but the Joker Mobile does not. I saw that there is now a Bane Car(another villain from Batman). I'm curious to see which car it is closer to scale with. I'm thinking about getting it just to have another option, or at least to make it a fair race. I'm tired of losing to children. You can also buy more track pieces to make this 6' x 3.5' race course even larger! Very pleased.

I bought this for my 6yo for xmas. It is awesome. The only problem is the Batman car is much better at staying on the track. My 6yo has a hard time running the Joker car because it flys off the track if you don't concentrate on how fast your going. I am going to solve that by buying another car more similar to the Batman car. Tons of fun.

I bought this for my 5yo (didn't read the "ages 8 and up" until it came to the house apparently). It is very fun for him - he loves the Batman car. One caveat: The Batman car is awesome for 4 and 5yo - it stays on the track and is easily raced by the younger kids. The Joker car however flies off the track often and is primarily a parents or older-kids-only car.

I ordered this toy to play with my 2 year old boy. Ok I ordered it because I wanted to play with it. All the same it rocks, and yes my 2 year old can complete several laps before his car flies off the track (batman car). The Joker car is harder to keep on the track so I have to use it. I knew this before ordering because I read the reviews. Its not that hard to figure out. Great toy, and good times.

I bought this set brand new from a competitor for $45 delivered. The one-day deal was before Christmas, and I received it a few days after the big day. No problem, my 4 1/2 yr old daughter didn't know it was coming, so it was a little after-Christmas jackpot. I have to say, she picked up the hand controller technique pretty quick, and we're having a blast. It brought back some old memories for me, as my whole attic as a child was nothing but one big model train and slot car haven for boys. I ruled the whole attic, and it was the place to be when the weather was bad. Well, now I have the bug again. Anyway, the weight and handling of the two cars is different, but so are the driving dynamics depending on which lane you pick. By taking that into consideration, when you put the better handling car (Batman) on the tougher loop (inside - furthest from the controller plugs), and the marginal handling car (Joker) on the easier loop (outside - closest to the controller plugs), the racing balances out better. If you swap the cars on the lanes, you definitely need to pay attention to feathering the controller. But all that is to be expected with slot cars, so enjoy!

Many people have stated that the cars fly off the track and the set does not work. This is absolutely not true. If you take a little time to try different speeds around the curves you will be fine. My 4 year-old son and I had no real problem using it. Also make sure you spread the brushes out so there is plenty of contact on the track.
I will say that the Batmobile is much easier to keep on the track. The Joker Mobile is harder to control so I would recommend using that one for more experienced/patient players. The track is pretty large and I often change the configuration to conserve space. The figure 8 is a simple design set-up that stores well and is easy to have the cars stay on the track. I gave this toy 4 stars in educational, because it is good a teacher of physics in the real world (friction, electricity, acceleration, and centripetal force). And of course one of life's most important lessons; patience. Its a fun toy as long at you take a little time to learn how to use it.

This was one of the best gifts I could have gotten my 5 year old son. He loves playing with this race track. The Batmobile is just the right weight for the power of this track but the Joker car seems to be a little to heavy because it doesn't take the loops real well. I am going to have to purchase another car, but I am OK with that. I would highly recommend this track, or any like it.

As stated in the other review the directions are a pain but I figured it out. The big problem is you can't have any fun with this toy. You can only pull about half way down on the trigger, any harder and the cars fly off of the track, so forget about using the turbo option. Great idea but too much power not enough track.

I got this for my 6 year old son for Christmas. He had a bit of difficulty finessing the batmobile through the loops and around that steep bank at the end, but got the hang of it before I did.
With just the right touch of the boost button, you can maintain traction on the loops, but back off quickly or you'll fly off the bank. You can eliminate the banked turn and loops if you or your kid find them too difficult at first. Of course this shortens the track, but it's start. This toy is well constructed, challenging and fun for kids and adults alike. If you're the Batman, keep your peripherial vision focused on your arch enemy. The collisions at the intersection favor the Joker's heavier car. If you time it exactly right though, you can plow your nose under him and flip him off the course. Can't wait to add some track come my son's birthday! Fun, fun, fun... |
