A solid account of a great woman's life,
By
This review is from: Carrie Chapman Catt: A Public Life (Paperback)
This is a competent, well written account of Catt's life. For the general reader who wants to be well informed about Catt, this is probably the best choice. However, in some ways Prof. Fowler's book ("Carrie Catt: Feminist Politician") is better--in my view Fowler's analysis is more incisive and his writing is stronger. Nevertheless, his intention was not a complete biography, and Van Voris's book contains much more detail and information.
Peck's biography of Catt (published in the 1940s) is very readable and full of the suffragist spirit, but omits or covers up important facts and leans strongly toward hero-worship of the subject. For those who want to invest only about an hour for a moderately complete overview of Catt's life, and of the second half of the suffrage struggle, this writer's own book, "Carrie Chapman Catt: A Life of Leadership" is available free online in full text via Google Books.
