5.0 out of 5 stars tender and witty romance
This book was absolutely hilarious, while at the same time tender and touching. I am a new reader of Ms. Barnett's, and she has found a new fan. Her ability to combine romance with such incredibly witty dialogue is fantastic! Definately a book worth reading!

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible
I'm shocked with the positive reviews this book received. The so called hero is a completely irresponsible, childish, violent, insensitive jerk and the only explanation for the so called heroine ending up with him is a rampant case of Stockholm syndrome. He is oblivious to the loneliness of his children, whose problems he tries to solve by pushing them to other's care...

4.0 out of 5 stars Two brides for two brothers, May 29, 2004

This review is from: Carried Away (Mass Market Paperback)
Georgina Bayard is struggling to keep her estate afloat after her brother recklessly withers away their fortune. Her last chance to save the family's remaining fortune is to marry into wealth. She has chosen short and balding John Canot to marry for his enormous wealth. Georgina thus embarks on the prepartion of society party in her remaining home in Maine to coax a proposal out of her intended.

Amy Emerson, a wealthy heiress of new money has just overheard her fiancé joke with his friends that he is only marrying her for her money. Brokenhearted, Amy pubicly breaks of her engagement at Geogina's party.

Eachann MacLachlan, tall, handsome and blond is the younger of two scots brothers who live on Arrant Island, off the coast of Maine, which remains a mystery to the local mainlanders, is in trouble. His wife died three years ago and he is left with two unruly children who have just been expelled from boarding school. Eachann decides that what he needs is a new wife to look after his two children, Kirsty and Graham.

Calum MacLachlan, older brother of Eachann, is tall dark and handsome and leads an orderly life unlike Eachann. He has sworn that he does not want any women in his life and has deidcated his life to helping newly arrived Scots immigrants.

When Eachann sets his eyes on the vibrant and sharp-tongued Georgina he decides that he will kidnap her for his wife and bring her back to Arrant Island. And for good measure he decides to kidnap Amy for his brother. Before the girls can protest they find themselves bundled aboard a ship and headed for Arrant Island.

Calum is shocked when he finds his brother has kidnapped two debutants to be their wives. He objects and states that the girls must be returned to their families but the problem is no boats can sail whilst there is a thick fog in the air surrounding the island and the fog doesn't lift before two weeks are up, ample time for the protagonists to get to know each other.

Calum and Amy are both attracted to each other's gentle and caring natures. Calum cannot help but notice Amy's sadness and helplessness and Amy finds Calum's meticulous nature endearing. This was sweet love story between two decent people and I was really happy that they got together.

However, as for Eachann and Georgina's story I was less convinced. The interaction and witty dialogue between the two head strong character was wonderful to read about but it was difficult to believe that the ambitious Georgina would end up with Eachann the islander who raises and breeds horses.

However, this was still a good read as with all Jill Barnett books. She never disappoints and I do love the funny situations and witty dialogue that she spins with ease.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two Romances... Double the Fun!, March 31, 2004
This review is from: Carried Away (Mass Market Paperback)
Heiress Georgina Bayard has one last chance to save her home and the Bayard clock dynasty from foreclosure. She must marry a wealthy man, and unfortunately, the one she must manipulate a proposal out of is short and bald. So she's using the last of her money to throw a huge house party to secure her proposal.

Young, gentle Amy Emerson is attending that party, as well as her fiancé. She finds out rather publicly he's only interested in her money. Brokenhearted and humiliated, she breaks off their engagement.

Eachann McLachlan, tall, blonde and a bit wild, lives at Highland Castle with his older brother, Cullum, who is his polar opposite. Cullum is dark, calm, meticulous, and has resolved to remain unmarried. The brothers are descendents of a Highlands clan who were forced to flee Scotland, and now reside together on this remote and isolated island off the coast of Maine.

Eachann's two young children have just been expelled from school, and are returning to live with him and Cullum. Eachann decides he must marry in order to have a wife to raise his children. During Georgina's house party, he overhears her say she must marry, so he impulsively kidnaps her to be his bride. Eachann also witnessed Amy's misery, and decides to bring her along against her will, as the bride for Cullum.

Once back on the island, Georgina is angry, screaming in protest, and tries repeatedly to escape. But between Eachann, who she refers to as "McOaf", and the pea soup fog covering the whole island, she's stuck with her captor. Amy handles the situation quietly while nursing her broken heart. Cullum finds himself attracted to Amy, but valiantly tries to fight his feelings. With escape impossible due to the never-ending fog, ultimately passions begin to flare as both couples come to terms with each other.

You get two romances here, and twice the fun. It's difficult to find a novel where the author can successfully combine two love stories in the same book. Ms. Barnett makes it look effortless in this selection. I never had difficulty keeping track of the characters, or what was taking place. The characters were three-dimensional, and I found all of them likeable. This was a sexy, entertaining, and hilarious read. It is one of my favorites by her, and actually one of my overall favorite romances. An absolute must read!

4.0 out of 5 stars 4+ stars for an adventure off the coast of Maine, December 6, 2002
This review is from: Carried Away (Mass Market Paperback)
I enjoyed this romance tale. It is the tale of two brothers who live on an island off the coast of Maine who have grown a bit eccentric in their ways. One day after having to retrieve his children from a boarding school (as they have misbehaved yet again) Eachann (widowed) decided that he and his brother do need wives and kidnaps 2 women from a "high society" party on the mainland.

Though the story does not tell you what year it is based in it has to be the late 1800's as they are still sailing from Scotland to Bath, ME by sail.

Eachann takes one woman who is not about to go down without a huge fight and reading her escape attempts are very amusing. The other is an heiress who finds out that her fiancé is not who she thought he was (she thought he loved her and not her money). She takes the kidnapping a bit better and uses the time to make sure that her priorities are in the right place.

Overall I really enjoyed this one.

"Carried Away" is the second book that I have read by Jill Barnett and I really enjoyed it. It was a good read for a rainy day. The only two that I disliked about it was 1.I didn't have time frame for when the book took place ( Maybe I just miss that). 2.I would have liked one of the main female characters have relations that were worry about them. Both girls didn't have anyone and that seem a little unbelievible to me. But overall it was a good book.

This is a great book. You have two love stories here, one so sweet you want to get misty over it(Calumn and Amy) and the other is Eachann and Georgianna - theirs is mostly a fight til the death - but outrageously funny, and passionate! The secondary characters add to the fun - Fergus who is blind as a bat and won't wear glasses; and Eachanns two kids, Kirsty (Heathen #1) and Grahm (Heathen #2) - To say there is a discipline problem here is to put it mildly!

The two brothers, Eachann and Calum - let's just say they're a little like the odd couple, Felix and Oscar - only much handsomer! Get the picture? Now get the book and thoroughly enjoy the story!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read!, November 22, 1997

This review is from: Carried Away (Mass Market Paperback)
Jill Barnett's books are known to be wonderfully entertaining, and CARRIED AWAY is no exception. The story revolves around two Scottish brothers living on an island off the New England coast and their quest to find wives. These two brothers are like Felix and Oscar of "The Odd Couple." Another winner from Ms. Barnett.

I'm shocked with the positive reviews this book received. The so called hero is a completely irresponsible, childish, violent, insensitive jerk and the only explanation for the so called heroine ending up with him is a rampant case of Stockholm syndrome. He is oblivious to the loneliness of his children, whose problems he tries to solve by pushing them to other's care like dirty laundry; then when this does not work, he kidnaps a woman to marry so she can take responsibility for the children and he can continue to ignore them. That the woman is dragged kicking and screaming is of no import to him, as well as the fact that because of the kidnapping she loses her reputation, her good name and ultimately her family home. In her place I would probably end up drowning myself, but no, by the end of this disaster she happily admits she has nothing to forgive him for, since his appalling behavior prevented her from making a marriage of convenience and led her to true love!!! I'm nauseated. I've read two books by this author before, and was never much impressed by her "heroes", but decided to persevere, since the stories have always an element of humor I enjoy. Never again. From now on I'm through with Jill Barnett.

4.0 out of 5 stars Two couples, two times the fun!, March 29, 2011
This review is from: Carried Away (Mass Market Paperback)
Single sentence summary: Two brothers have taken refuge on a secluded Maine island but one brother decides they both need a wife the only way to get any women to come to such a secluded place is to kidnap them.

This was a fun and cute read. I liked how there was two romance stories with very different male characters. Of course they both must be beefy and rich- which seems to be a typical historical romances. Eachann is the younger brother and is the very alpha male of the two. He doesn't necessary boss his older brother around but he is bossy otherwise. Calum is the older and more a beta male. I found a scene where he takes out a dust pan and brush to clean up the dirt that Eachann tracks into the house. Calum isn't completely beta, he has some alpha male moments but he is the more calm and gentle of the two.

The women are just like the men. Amy is the timid and needier of the two women - the perfect match for Calum. While, Georgina, a gusty and outspoken debutante won't take any kind of bossiness from Eachann. A firey women who will make Eachann burn for the first time since his wife died.

Both couples were fun even if Calum and Amy was the more predictable of the two. Of course there is more then just the guys trying to figure out a way to get the women to stay and it all came together nicely. It was a little bumpy getting there though. Everyone else around the main characters felt like fillers just trying to move some part of the story, including Eachann's children.

I really enjoyed this book, the character were the best part of it. 3.75 Stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Barnett, July 13, 2001
By
This review is from: Carried Away (Mass Market Paperback)
Carried Away is wildly funny. In this story, there are two love interests, each couple the opposite of each other. The relationship between Georgina and Eachann is passionate and wild while being hilarious. The two characters are constantly at odds and there are rarely any times when they are not trying to get one up on the other. Calum and Amy love without hesitation and without the stubborness and temperment of Eachann's and Georgina's. The basic plot is that Eachann as a father of a wicked but needy Kristy and her little brother who have both been expelled from school. He decides that he needs a wife for his children after his has past away years before. In solution to this, he "carries away" Georgina and Amy, who he graciously decides will be his brother's bride (regardless that his brother has no wish for one) from a society party. Both women are wealthy debutantes and the society party itself is thrown by Georgina and although the two are not "friends" they are forced to depend on each other in order to get away.

This book is a lighthearted delight. It's amusing and heartwarming as well as orginal. Jill Barnett never fails to create magic in her writing.
