This review is from: Carried Away (Audio CD)
Robbie Dupree is almost a one-hit wonder. He scored with Steal Away and Hot Rod Hearts from his debut album in 1980. I don't know of any other hits but his debut was his most successful album. This album should've been a success as well, but this kind of music doesn't sell anymore and it didn't in 1987 when it was released. This album has a touch of 80's production which was added for effect rather than to market it. It's only apparent in flourishes and background effects that anchor the album in its era without overwhelming the musicianship and songwriting. Robbie is an outstanding vocalist. He has been compared to Michael McDonald, although I think that Michael is the clear winner in that contest. Robbie is no slouch either and has a full, smooth tenor that fits this style of music like a bareback evening gown. But seriously, you will definitely enjoy this if you like a good balance of jazz, R&B and pop. Good from start to finish and head and shoulders above most similar artists. He would give Josh Groban a run for his money if he were given the chance. Highly recommended.
