Sad end for such a good series of books, February 2, 2006
This review is from: Carrier #23: Last Stand (Paperback)
I was thoroughly disappointed with this book. While the other books in this storyline were followed the career lines of recurring characters, this book featured only 1 or 2. The others just seemed to disappear with no explanation. The story itself (centered on the ancient Japanese Samurai class) has very little to do with carrier aviation (the basis for the series)... and is, in fact, only used as a background for a short chapter or 2 in what is a so-so naval yarn.
Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of all was the anti-climactic ending, which contradicts everything the previous 2/3's of the book tells us about these people. It's like the author received a 1-hour deadline call from the publisher, and he found a way to wrap the whole story up in the final 25 pages.
The first 22 books in the series are a good read... particularly for an aviation fan, and especially for a naval aviation fan. But this last volume is a waste of time. Last Stand? More like Last Whimper.
