I've read a lot of Edwin Hoyt's books, so I was looking forward to this. Unfortunately, it is just a re-hash of all of his earlier works - when you look at the section entitled "notes" his "sources" are the books he's already written.

If you're looking for a nuts and bolts of carriers, this is not it. If you want to learn about carrier development, tactics or strategy, this is not the book. Very little about the Admirals who led these warships into battle.

There is one chapter of pre WW2 information, the reast is devoted to the carrier war in the Central Pacific. If you want an overview and quick summary of what happened in those battles, this book is ok. Only one chapter about Korea, and the last chapter seems to be just glued on so they can say to the Persian Gulf - but even that is misleading, because it was publised before Desert Storm or Gulf 2.

No photos or maps to speak of. I did not find anything new or exciting in this book. OK for a novice of carrier war, but that's about it.
