Flora & George Duke weave Brazilian magic together,
By
This review is from: Carry on (Audio CD)
In 1979, George Duke took a break from his funky R&B successes to produce this Brazilian-jazz fusion record for Flora Purim. The result is one of Flora's best albums. Milton Nascimento's "From the Lonely Afternoon" is a highlight, given a more intense, upbeat interpretation here than the version he recorded with Wayne Shorter on "Native Dancer". Duke's original contribution, "Carry On", displays his polished R&B techniques, seasoned with a heavy dash of Brazilian spice. Max Middleton's "Freeway Jam", a Jeff Beck Group hit, is another highlight, with Flora's voice replacing Beck's guitar as the primary melody instrument.

Flora Purim at her Highest Point,
By
This review is from: Carry on (Mlps) (Audio CD)
This 1979 (wow!!! 30 years ago) is a fantastic Brazilian Jazz CD with one of the best performers of the genre; Flora's voice is so powerful and sweet at the same time.
Highlights here are definitely "Sarara Miolo" by Gilberto Gil, "From the Lonely Afternoon" by Milton Nascimento, "Carry On" by George Duke and "Beijo Partido" by Toninho Horta. Check her fantastic group for this historical release.: - Flora Purim / Vocals and Dubbing (Multiple Recording) - Airto Moreira / Percussions and Drums - Bobby Lyle / Keyboards and Piano - Sheila E / Additional Percussions - Hugo Fattoruso / Fender Rhodes / Keyboards - Al Jarreau / Vocals - Joe Farrell / Flute - Mike Sembello / Guitars - Raul de Souza / Trombone - Jerry Hey / Trumpets - George Duke / Keyboards, Compositins, Arrangments , Production - Ronnie Foster / Keyboards - Ricky Lawson / Drums - Leon "Ndugu" Chancler / Drums - Keith Jones / Bass - Laudir de Oliveira / Percussions etc. etc. A True Masterpiece.......... P.S. This is the Japanese Import on mini LP CD version -the sound is outstanding- period.
