Editorial Reviews

And now for something completely bawdy. Carry on are two words to gladden the hearts of British comedy fans. Thirty-one Carry On films were produced between 1958-1992, and in 1975, Carry On Laughing brought the Carry On mojo to television, albeit for a scant 13 episodes. Each is a randy historical romp or farcical parody. You don't have to be familiar with the films to enjoy this series' extremely guilty pleasures. There are ribald double entendres, shameless mugging, awful puns, and even worse jokes. In one "monarchic moment," one loyal subject tells his Queen, "I will serve you humbly." She responds, "Good, I haven't had humbly in ages." Jokes like that are enough to really make you rue Britannia, but Kenneth Connor, Sid James, Joan Sims, Barbara Windsor, Jack Douglas, Peter Butterworth, and David Lodge make it all sound like Shakespeare. The episodes takes potshots at Upstairs, Downstairs, the Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries, and other historical and mythical figures. The episode "Under the Round Table" will not make anyone forget Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which came out the same year (oddly enough, both make hay with the horse/coconut thing). Carry On Laughing is more akin to Benny Hill than Beyond the Fringe, but for fans of the films, it is a dandy footnote to the Carry On canon. --Donald Liebenson

4.0 out of 5 stars pretty good June 5, 2004
By it
Format:DVD
This is a set of twelve half hour British television episodes. They satirize several periods of English history and the Lord Peter Wimsey novels. To get the most fun from the program you will need to know the details of the historical and fictional situations that are satirized.
The cast also appeared in the highly successful Carry On movie series some of which can be purchased here at Amazon.com.

2.0 out of 5 stars something missing June 23, 2004
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This is a major disappointment as most of the beloved Carry On gang are missing. Sid James appears five times, Hattie Jacques only once and Kenneth Williams and Charles Hawtrey not at all. Laughs are scarce and it's easy to see why this series was short lived.

4.0 out of 5 stars Carry On in Heaven! March 12, 2007
Format:DVD
I guess I was lucky that I picked up this gem at a discount entertainment store. Anyway, I would have liked to see more of Hattie Jacques but I was glad to see the wonderful Joan Sims who was simply one of the most brilliant and gifted of all British comediennes. Why she didn't get Damehood is beyond me because she simply was brilliant and underestimated. She could play Queen Guinevere, a matronly housekeeper, or a drummer. The laughs are not hard to come by. Babsy Windsor does play that role of ditsy blonde too well. I like watching Kenneth Connor, Sid James, and the Carry On Gang. Now, I wished they did a Carry On Shakespeare edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great February 18, 2008
Format:DVD
I love the Carry On films but the TV series doesn't quite reach the same potential. Not all the actors who made the movies what they were show up in the TV show, which is too bad. However, the writing is good and the humor is kind of the same. Certainl better than the average TV program being produced today!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as bawdy as the films March 18, 2007
Format:DVD
This collection is OK, but not quite what I was expecting from the carry on crew. We had some laughs, and from a nostalgia perspective, this is a good collection to have, as I really do enjoy British humour.

4.0 out of 5 stars WHAT A CARRY ON! January 18, 2005
By R. Reel
Format:DVD
OK, WHERE DO I BEGIN, THIS SERIES OF 13 CLASSIC TALES FROM CERTAIN PARTS OF HISTORY REALLY DOES BRING OUT THE CREAM OF THE CARRY ON TEAM. NEAR ENOUGH EVERY CARRY ON STAR APPEARS IN THIS SERIES AT SOME POINT OR ANOTHER, THE SCRIPTS ARE VERY FLIMSY AND VERY WEAK AT TIMES, BUT THE TEAM MAKE THE MOST OF THIS AND MAKE THEM GEMS. THE BEST EPISODE FOR ME WAS "THE CASE OF THE SCREAMING WINKLES", IT'S JUST PURE BRILLIANCE AND GREAT TIMING AND INTERACTION BEETWEEN JACK DOUGLAS AND KENNETH CONNOR. THIS SERIES IS JUST SIMPLY GREAT!!!
