5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful, December 11, 2008
This review is from: Carry the Weight (Audio CD)
I first heard Denison play the song Carry the Weight at a good friend's wedding & I loved it. The second time I heard him play it was at a house concert where he invited the 50 of us to sing along with him.

I fell in love with Denison's music when I heard Little Flowers on The Invisible Children movie.

The album Carry the Weight seems to continue on with all of the beauty, simplicity & joy of Denison's Safe Away & Are You a Dreamer. At the same time Carry the Weight is different. The songs & production are bigger sounding, Denison's voice is stronger & clearer. Perhaps Denison is more confident & comfortable with who he is & what he is all about.

Simply put I love this album. I rank it up their with some of my favorites like The Innocence Mission's Birds of my Neighborhood or Dave Brubeck's Time Out or The Jesus & Mary Chain's Darklands. These are albums I can listen to over & over again. Carry the Weight & records like this simultaneously calm me down & fill me with encouragement & inspiration to focus on my day & my task at hand.

Found out about Denison Witmer the hard way. I first heard an interesting female singer over the speakers at a local book store. Went to the desk to ask what was playing & found out about Rosie Thomas. Within 6 months I bought all her CD's & through her found out about Sufjan Stevens, bought 3 of his CD's & yes you guessed it; found out about Denison Witmer. All 3 artists sometimes help each other on their CD's. Must be some sort of "From Across America to New York Folk Scene" happening. The first Denison Witmer CD I bought was "Are You a Dreamer?" which was very spiritual, positive, clean, & about issues of life that I have been thinking of. The only down side was my first impression that his singing voice sounded like James Taylor & at his guitar playing sounded like Cat Stevens. These 2 impressions faded away after a few more listens & its a fantastic CD on its own merit. I just had to get his newest CD "Carry The Weight". This CD continues with serious songs about life with an under current spiritual message. This time around the music has a slight faster pace because it doesn't deal with dreaming or sleeping. I heard Catholic references like stigmata & St. Francis in the pervious CD & on this CD the title "Catholic Girl" seems to be a give away. Some other songs like "Beautiful Boys & Girls" is about the sad state of the world but has hope for the human race. "From Here On Out" is either about human sexuality & commitment, or about a mother & child. Maybe either/or but play this song & see which way you interept it. "Carry The Weight" holds more of an universal Christian message of helping everyone in need. Great production & songs, not a bad or boring song in the whole set but I believe "Are You a Dreamer?" will hold up more through time. Maybe I just played this CD too many times in the last few days & need to give it a rest. If you like this CD, try to reverse the order I did & check out Sufjan Stevens & Rosie Thomas.
