5.0 out of 5 stars Montgomery Gentry's back!
There debut album was good, but this one is great. The first track is the chart-topping "She Couldn't Change Me." "My Father's Son" is a great country tune, too. 5.0 out of 5 stars Montgomery Gentry's back!, May 6, 2001

There debut album was good, but this one is great. The first track is the chart-topping "She Couldn't Change Me." "My Father's Son" is a great country tune, too. "Cold One Comin' On" doesn't sound like it could be very long, but it goes on for a full five minutes, every one of them enjoyable. "While The World Goes Down the Drain" tells how, while the drugs are taking over the streets, there's always a place in the country you can go. Incredible! "Hellbent On Saving Me" would have to be my personal favorite, combining honky-tonk-humor lyrics with a powerful rythm. "Carrying On" may sound a bit too much like "All Night Long," but is that so bad? Really, this song is like a biography of who Montgomery Gentry is. "Black Jack Fletcher . . ." is another great song. "Lucky To Be Here" also ranks high on this CD, cowritten by the boys themselves. Eddie and Troy share the honor of lead vocals on this one, as they do on the title track. "Too Hard to Handle . . ." is another hit. The three I left out are good too, so don't you worry. Montgomery Gentry's style could be described as many things. Traditional, honky-tonk, even contemporary. I say simply this: It's Montgomery Gentry. 'Nuff said.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eddie and Troy Kick it up a Notch...., June 26, 2001

What's better than two country boys who put on a killer live show? Two country boys who can take that same amazing energy into the studio and produce a CD like Carrying On! With the first hit of this sophmore effort, She Couldn't Change Me, Montgomery Gentry polishes off some of the rough edges from their debut and still stays true to the no-apologies, real-country feel they committed to on their amazing Tatoos and Scars. Don't miss the two most amazing tracks, the very hot (dare I say sexy and risk all credibility?) blues-ey angst-fest Cold One Comin'On and the surprisingly poignent, MG-style love-song Hellbent on Saving Me. Cold One...is a variation on the typical broken-hearted drinking song, but there is nothing here that you have heard before. The guitar licks are unbelievable and the lyrics ("...a bar room or that bedroom back at home...") make you want to turn off the lights and brood about everyone who has ever done you wrong. Hellbent...is equally un-formulaic. It is a love song, but there is not an ounce of sap or silly sentiment here! How can there be with a line like "...She's an angel, she's a saint and that's two things that I ain't." On a technical level this is an almost perfect song and a great showcase for Eddie's honest vocal style. Quite rightly everyone is going to love tracks like Carrying On and While the World Goes down the Drain, but these two songs along with My Father's Son and Black Jack Fletcher and Mississippi Sam make this a truly great CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars could these guys save Country, January 29, 2002

It really is refreshing to hear a duo like this in an age where country has turned to pop. I've actually gotten away from the country scene (the new stuff, anyway) because I can't stand to see where the whole thing is going. It's pretty painful to see Billy Gillman belting out pop tunes on CMT. It hurts. Every once in a while, something good comes along, like these guys, and restores my faith a little bit. This really is good stuff. Their sound is sort of a throwback to the good ole days of outlaw country when it was about the music. Not image, pop-fluff, and appealing to the masses. Every one of the songs here are good, granted I like some more than others, but there certainly isn't a bad one here. I can tell that these tunes will all sound great live. Tunes like the smash hit "she couldn't change me", "my father's son", "while the world goes down the drain" and "cold one coming on" are all great tunes and the title track "carrying on" reminds me of a Charlie Daniels tune. Their cover of Waylon's "Ramblin Man" is also worth mentioning.

I'm really glad to see that these guys are having so much success. Maybe country isn't going down the drain after all and people still DO have some taste in music. Oh well, as long as these guys, as well as Travis Tritt, Trace Atkins, Marty Stuart, Dwight Yoakem, and Gary Allen keep putting out albums, I'll be happy. Keep it up guys.

I have had this cd for about 4 weeks longer than the actual release date due to advance copy, and I have not gone a day without listening to it, pure in your face hard core country, from two guys that sing it like it is. Well worth the investment, Tattoos and Scars will feed your music need as well. BUY THIS CD~!!!!!!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fine, Old Style, Hard Country, June 8, 2005
This review is from: Carrying on (Audio CD)
Montgomery Gentry provides something that has been missing from country music for far too long. They provide a dose of "hard country" that doesn't try and pretend to be a pop crossover. Their music is neither jingoistic nor is it blatantly anti-American. Some may be convinced that they sing to "red state" values while others will be equally convinced that "blue state" working class people are the audience. The truth is that the audience is anyone who likes hard charging country music.

Their vocal style is reminiscent of Hank Williams, Jr. of long ago and their instrumental style bears a lot of the same resemblance. There are definite southernisms in the manner of speech but the messages of the songs would be just as appreciated by a working auto plant laborer in Detroit.

Great Job!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pedal-to-the-Metal, Rollicking Fun!, December 11, 2001
This review is from: Carrying on (Audio CD)
There are darn few country artists who really scratch the southern male's itch for rocking, testosterone tunes. Of course, there's ol' Waylon, Hank, and Travis Tritt, and even the "new guy" Charlie Robison, but the bad boys from Kentucky, Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry, belong on the short list of highly listenable bad boys in country. "Carrying On" kicks! I do not buy many CD's, either. This one was well worth my hard-earned cash.

They've done it again. This is simply an incredible album. From the opening chords of the hit "She Couldn't Change Me," all the way through to the final lines of "Tried and True" Montgomery Gentry show why they are destined to be true superstars of country music. I bought the first album on the spur of the moment and was absolutely blown away. This second release does not disappoint. While in some ways a more grown up album, with a slightly more produced sound, the strength of this duo shine through. The harmonies are as tight as ever. You can tell that the boys are more comfortable in the studio than they were on the first album. The arrangements are more complex, but the themes remain. They talk about the heartland and the music and life that they love. It's simply honest, real music and that's what country's always been about.

5.0 out of 5 stars I need more copies!, May 10, 2001

First, let me say that my music taste is pretty eclectic. As far as country goes, I don't typically prefer the "traditional" or the "ultra-new" styles. If a song, of any style, catches my attention, I'll give the artist a try. Montgomery Gentry SOLD me with "Couldn't Change Me". (What a video!) I was slow buying Tattoos and Scars...I don't know how I missed so many great tunes on the radio! But in the month or so that I've had it...I've almost worn out an indestructible CD. On May 1 I ran to the store to get Carrying On. (I haven't done that since I was a teenager!) These guys are awesome! They each have a great sound that blends together perfectly. What you will hear is lots of talent, lots of professionalism and lots of heart. It's very apparent that they love what they do. Their choice of songs reminds those of us city-dwellers that there is another lifestyle alive and well in the U.S.A...one that, at times, we can only dream of! I'm buying more copies of both so I can keep one at home, in the car, and in the office.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Doubt- MG's best album!!, March 21, 2006
This review is from: Carrying on (Audio CD)
This has that southern rock sound in it still but this time it also has that good ol country sound as well (which some of Montgomery Gentry's songs lack; but I still am a HUGE HUGE fan)

All the songs on this are great, 'Ramblin man' is one of my fav's; and so is "While the world goes down the drain"

Also, "My fathers son" has that great guitar part in the begininng and I could tell i'd already love it. Also, The Fine Line, and not to mention "Cold one comin on" (what a powerful song!!!) This whole CD is great- not a bad song on it. Definetely MG's best!!!
I think this CD secured Montgomery Gentry's place in the country music business, and their other two after this one backed it up.
MG aren't goin anywhere they are here to stay!!
MG ROCK!!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars MG 's sophmore slump, August 7, 2005

This was MG's second cd offering after announcing to the world who they were with tattoos and scars. However IMO this album was a sophmore slump for a duo who has gone on to make two more killer cd's
The CD starts off in a great direction with "She couldn't change me" and "Cold on,Coming on", however some of the other tracks such as "blackjack fletcher" seemed more like filler material to put out a CD to capture the wave they were on. Possibly this is why the CD only stayed as their latest offering for a little more than a year.
If you are a fan of the songs that got radio play (such as " she couldn't change me") or are completeing a collection of MG material, then this is a buy, other than that, Any of the other 3 will satisfy your cravings for southern fried country a hell of a lot better.
