4.0 out of 5 stars Obsolote because of newer, better comp
The Cars had kind of two personalities over their career: the pop hits like "Drive" and "Shake it Up" and the album tracks that classic rock radio still plays like "Moving in Stereo" and "You're All I've Got Tonight". This album is great if you ONLY want the pop material...all the Top 40 hits are here...but if you like any of their best album material at all, you'll be...

2.0 out of 5 stars There are better compilations out there
I only give this album two stars because it is now obsolete and should be deleted from the band's back catalog. There have been two better compilations released since this one came along in 1985 - "Just What I Needed - The Cars Anthology" and "The Cars Complete Greatest Hits" (even the title of that one seems to be a dig at this disc's anemic track listing)...

4.0 out of 5 stars Obsolote because of newer, better comp, May 13, 2005
This review is from: The Cars Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
The Cars had kind of two personalities over their career: the pop hits like "Drive" and "Shake it Up" and the album tracks that classic rock radio still plays like "Moving in Stereo" and "You're All I've Got Tonight". This album is great if you ONLY want the pop material...all the Top 40 hits are here...but if you like any of their best album material at all, you'll be much better off with the CD "Complete Greatest Hits" (ASIN B00005Y1XY) which sacrifices only lesser track "Heartbeat City" from this one and then adds on several great tracks you don't get here:
"Bye Bye Love", "You're all I've Got Tonight" and "Moving in Stereo" from the debut, CANDY-O's "Dangerous Type" and "It's All I Can Do",HEARTBEAT CITY's "Hello Again" (and "Why Can't I Have You?" if you happen to like that one..I consider it a lesser effort), and even a track from the farewell album DOOR TO DOOR ("You are the Girl").

If such things matter to you, they also come in chronological order (though those prone to whining about it could always program their CD player or burn a copy for the car in the "correct" order).

BOTTOM LINE:
If you like the Cars, this one doesn't serve them as well for a single disc compilation as "Complete Greatest Hits" does. Get that one instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars Take'er For A Spin, April 22, 2004
This review is from: The Cars - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
"The Cars-Greatest Hits" is the perfect example of catchy hooks and pop rock prowess. The songs herein are simply pop rock hit after pop rock hit. "Just What I Needed," "You Might Think," "Magic," "Let's Go," and "Shake It Up" can all be found here. The rest of the playlist is fun to listen to and even more fun to recall good times with old friends.

This is the type of album that can be played at a party and no one will complain. The Cars knew how to make pop hits, that's all I can really say. There songs are fun, catchy and you'll find it hard to say anything bad about them.

My favorite song on this album, however, is probably the most serious one out of the bunch: "Drive." But that's what is so amazing about these guys. They cranked out a ton of hits and still managed to throw in a successful ballad. Fortunately for them, they haven't been thrown into that bottomless pit with bands like REO Speedwagon, Styx, and Boston as commercial sellouts. For some reason, the yahoos at the music magazines get off on trashing these bands, but the Cars have remained out of their crosshairs so far(maybe because Ric Ocasek's wife is so hot).

Throw this one on for a good time. It's highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Cars - Excellent Greatest Hits Collection, January 14, 2001
This review is from: The Cars - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
As a band, The Cars released one outstanding album (their AMAZING self-titled debut) and a number of other excellent and catchy singles. If this album has a weakness, its that it draws only two songs ("Just What I Needed" and "My Best Friend's Girl") from the debut record. Nevertheless, there are plenty of Cars classics on this album, including four from "Heartbeat City," ("Magic," "Drive," "You Might Think" and the title track) their most popular album. The Cars are one of those rare bands able to put out a greatest hits collection in which nearly every song WAS in fact a hit. This collection is a solid representation of their career.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Cars' Rocking Best Hits!, July 17, 2002

The Cars were a group destined to be quickly forgotten in terms of who they were, for they lived professional lives that were marginal in the sense that they recorded and toured, but were hardly interested in the hard rock life style. Instead, it is the body of music that they left behind that will be remembered, for they were incredibly successful at turning out song after song, with each dancing its way all the way into the top ten hit list. From "Just What I Needed' to "Since You're Gone", from "You Might Think", from "Good Times Roll" to "Touch And Go", this is a collection of songs that make you want to hear more. And there is plenty more here for your listening enjoyment, from "Drive" to "Tonight She Comes", from "My Best Friend's Girl" to "Heartbeat City", from "let's Go" to "I'm Not The One". My personal favorites here are "Magic", and of course, the terrific "Shake It Up", but all of these songs are great. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good collection but not the best collection to own, April 17, 2004

This review is from: The Cars - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I've had this collection for years. It offers many great songs "Just What I Needed," "My Best Friend's Girl," "Good Times Roll," "Let's Go," "Touch and Go," "Shake It Up," "You Might Think," "Drive," "Magic," and a new song in 1985 "Tonight She Comes." However, you can do better by purchasing Cars - Complete Greatest Hits, which contains 7 more classic songs not featured in this collection (You're All I've Got Tonight, Bye Bye Love, Moving in Stereo, Dangerous Type, Hello Again, Why Can't I Have You, and You are the Girl). I would definitely recommend that you purchase The Cars-- Complete Greatest Hits instead of this collection. Besides being more comprehensive, it is less expensive as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate New Wave poseurs (its a compliment!), March 16, 2005

These guys sound like they came straight out of Liverpool or Manchester. The fact that Ric Ocasek and the boys were really from the United States escaped me for quite some time. As a youngster growing up surrounded by the New Wave sound in the early 80s, the Cars fit right in.

Their catchy hooks, songwriting skill, and overall musical talent were second to none, and this greatest hits compilation is packed with pop gems: "You Might Think" (their biggest hit ever), "Drive", "Good Times Roll", and "Magic" are all present. "Shake it Up" (my fave) and "Tonight She Comes" will have your toes tapping, and there isn't a bad track on the CD.

This is one compilation that will definitely stay in your player for awhile. Worth every penny!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my Favs!, September 6, 1998
This review is from: The Cars - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This compilation is honestly the "best" of The Cars and is one of the best Greatest Hits albums around. They didn't stick in any of the songs you don't want to remember because there aren't any you don't wanna remember! Everytime I listen to this album it makes me remember how good the Eighties really were and also makes me wish The Cars would reunite so that I could experience those days "live" one more time. Ric, Ben, Guys, ...come on , one more time around the block?...for old times sake?

The Cars Greatest Hits is a good overview of The Cars career, the only released one more album after this complation. The Cars Greatest Hits has all the songs you would expect to be here. All of the big hit singles, as well as a new song,"Tonight She Comes." This would a good starting place for the casual fan, if you enjoy this you should buy their first album as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still one of the best drivin' music around!, May 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Cars - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
When I was in high school (circa 1979-1983) I discovered the Cars. New Wave/Punk music was the new and improved rock music of the time and the Cars was the band that pretty much commercialized it. Now, it's 1999 and a whole new generation of rockers like Green Day or Sugar Ray are continuing where the Cars left off. It's easy to see that the Cars' music (even though a lot my friends in high school hated them) has INFLUENCED a whole new generation of musicians, who now think that the Cars are God themselves :-) Who'da THUNK that the Cars would even be in rock music's history back in 1978? :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars The Cars floor it with this album, March 1, 2000

This is one of the best "Greatest Hits" albums of the 80's. All of the songs have some catchy background music which makes the vocals even better. This is just about a flawless album by any means. The only song I wasn't crazy about was "Since You're Gone." Other than that, this is a great album. I just wish that The Cars could have made a few more great albums after their Heartbeat City album. This would probably be in the top 3 "Greatest Hits" albums of all time if they would've. However, I do recommend this album to any fan of New Wave or great pop music.
