Editorial Reviews

"Cars," Now, Now Every Children's first full-length album is all about life on the highway. Rerecording 3 of the singles off their first two EPs plus 7 more brand new tracks are a series of poignant moments written mostly over the last year. During that time, the band has ventured outside their Midwestern routes and played a select west coast tour, as well as shared the stage with some of their idols including Mates of State and the Rosebuds.

Now, Now Every Children consists of the duo and long-time friends Cacie Dalager (lead vocals and guitars) and Brad Hale (drums). After self-releasing a couple of EPs, the band got signed to the Afternoon Records label and now comes their debut album.

The overall sound on "Cars" (11 tracks; 39 min.) reminds me of Calla (albeit with a female lead singer, of course), with sparse instrumentation but nevertheless building into a full sound, you would never know that this is just a duo when listening to the album. My favorite tracks include the opener "Not One, But Two" (one of the songs from the early EPs, but rerecorded for the album), "Everyone You Know" (also from an earlier EP). Midway in the album, things kick up another notch with the threatening "Friends With My Sister", starting off slowly but eventually crashing into a wall of sound and a great instrumental outro, just great (and the best track on the album), "Headlights" and "In the City", expanding their sound to include some synths. Nice.

In all, this is quite an intruiging debut album, and I've had this in my CD player for quite a while. Now, Now Every Children is about to hit the road again for a nation-wide tour starting in early August with another up-and-coming band, Bad Veins, and what a delightful double bill that makes. I can only hope they will make it close to Cincinnati sometime soon, as I can't wait to see how these songs will resonate in a live setting.

I stumbled across 'Cars' shortly after it was released, previewed a few songs, and never looked back. It was love at first listen. This album was on repeat for most of the year: while I was waiting for the bus after work, hanging around the house, on long road trips, and even now, many months since I discovered it, it hasn't gotten old. I don't know what it is, but there's something about Now, Now Every Children that makes me smile every time I listen in.

I can't say enough how much I love this band. They're well worth your time and money. Take a chance, take a listen, and I'm sure you will enjoy.

Can't wait to hear more from them!
