He loves these stories. He's forsaken Thomas The Tank Engine, Curious George and all construction books for this series of stories. Every night for two months he insists on getting three of the nine stories read to him at bed time.
As for the book - there are indeed three stories repeated here that were in the shorter, three story book. For what it's worth they have been rewritten, I'm not sure I like the version here better than the original but my 3 year old does. The other stories are from the video. The images taken from the video and look really good. Type is big and the stories written short enough that you can get through them repetitively without too much dreariness - which is good because if your 3 year old is like mine, you'll be reading them a lot.
The stories really match up the actual Mater Tales videos. We don't have the DVD but you can find some in youtube. For example, itunes store has a full video of Tokyo Mater (appear as trailer). So, we regularly read the book first and then watch the video. The fact they can anticipate what they will say makes a nice learning experience for him.
Only point that I like explaining to my son, is that while it is great to have imagination, it is not ok to 'lie', since in several stories one does not know if Mater is making it up, or actually happen. The stories though, are often funny (at least first time) even for adults.
The book is totally worth the money. Highly recommend.
