Convenient And Money Saving,
By Kevin Killian (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)

You don't have to use the stand but for me that's the whole point of the item. So many magnifiers leave you unable to do fine knitting, sewing or woodworking because your hands just aren't free. Even reading a book becomes a chore if you have to use both hands to keep the book from flopping closed in your lap, and yet using a magnifying glass with your teeth is not practical. This stand answers the needs of many a busy man or woman. For you could poke the magnifier into a nearby shelf and position your work underneath it, but this stand obviates the need for that.
You can magnify your material so it looks as though it's twice the real size, and there's a spot to double that size too for fine calibrations. I gave one to an old friend who makes tin soldiers out of old fishing lures, and it's incredibly detailed work which he pursues with a specially built little soldering iron. It's a tool so tiny that if he sets it down on the arm of a sofa it gets lost in the slipcover, except for its heat. This lighted spot, he says, allows him to make three times as many toy soldiers in one session than ever before, even when he was younger and nimbler in the fingers. For those of you who just want to focus a bright spot light on a hard-to-see object like a will, this might be the answer. One of my specialties is rare books and detecting forgeries in and of first editions (or "so-called" first editions), and recently I pulled my MagniLamo over to my library table, where a first edition of one of Yeats' Cuala Press broadsides was lying. Concentrating all of its power on the spot where Yeats was supposed to have signed the work, I could see right away it was a rubber stamp or ballpoint reproduction of Yeats' signature -- not a bad forgery, all things considered, and one that might have cost me plenty.

Small but well suited,

This is a very practical magnifier. I purchased it for use in building models; for painting the smaller components. The lens is clear and the quality is good for the price.
Cons: I think the arm should be longer as it tends to get in the way sometimes. All in all, for the price, I would definitely recommend this magnifier.

UP: Works good, well built, easy to handle, acceptable lens quality and easy to take apart from the stand.
DOWN: The light is not strong enough, and the flexible arm can't be bent at a 90 degrees angle.

Great for tiny crossword puzzles,

I bought this for doing a daily crossword calendar which is in tiny print on small paper and the MagniLamp is working out just fine. I was worried that the legs of the stand might be in the way of the paper and that the glass would be too low for me to write under it, but neither is a problem. The diameter of the lens is a tad larger than 4" and the 4X insert is 1". I chose this over other freestanding magnifiers because it had the 4X insert which I need for removing finger splinters, etc. The quality of both lenses is good and the whole unit is lightweight but sturdy. My only complaint would be, as another reviewer noted, the short section of bendable stem doesn't curve a full 90 degrees, and that's the angle I need, so I do have to prop up the base by about half an inch. All in all, though, especially for the price, this is a great item.

I tried several types of magnifiers and this one topped them all. It fits comfortably in my small working space and illuminates jump rings and other small accessories. I am well pleased.

I must say when I opened the box, I was pleasantly surprised at the size of the unit. Oh, I know, the measurements are included in the description, but seeing the actual item does make a difference to me.
The base is sturdy and the weight of the magnifier doesn't compromise the stability. Although I'll alway use the stand with the magnifier, the fact that the it detaches from the base is a plus for me since I'll be using it when I teach how to weave chain maille and it'll be easier to pack. Yes, the entire unit is plastic but I'm not going to be using it in any type of "hostile" environment, so I'm ok with that. The light is not fantastic, but adds enough to help see details clearly. All in all, for the price, if you do any type of close-up work this can't be beat.

I like everything about the magnifier, except the light is so hokey. I can't even tell if it's on or not. Surely it wouldn't cost the manufacturer to use a larger bulb to improve the performance of their product.

I got this product for the magnifier-on-a-stand which works great. It's just what I wanted for jewelry projects. The lamp is basically non-existant. Forget it. I would reccommend this product for the convenience and price. Just get your light from another source!

I bought this item as a gift for my husband and he loves it. The hands-free feature is the best. The light is a little dim though.
