4.0 out of 5 stars Works Fine
This 5X loupe works fine for my purposes. I'm transferring thirty years worth of family photos into archival quality boxes and am using the loupe to match prints and negatives that became separated over the years. I'm looking at 35mm negs. If they were smaller a higher magnification might be more suitable.

3.0 out of 5 stars what do expect for cheap?
I bought this to examine large coins. It is big. the lens diameter is 2 and 5/8". the viewing area is just shy of 4". and it stands about 3" tall. Lots of room for large coins, bugs, whatever. The distortion free viewing area is only the center 1/2" in diameter. Also, I need a bright light shining from the side to properly Illuminate an object.

4.0 out of 5 stars 5X power, oh yea!, November 1, 2011

After purchasing this little beauty for latent fingerprint work, I realized it wasn't so little. Which was actually nice; it provides about a 6.5cm viewing lens which makes latents and 10-prints really visible. Seeing this in forensic supply catalogs for four to five times what I paid here is another great thing. It is the exact same thing for a fraction of the cost. I guess it's like everything forensic; you give it that title and folks will pay the premium price.

I was going to use the magnifier to inspect coins in my collection. But, the coin does not come into focus until you lift the magnifier about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. The whole idea of using this design was to quickly place the unit over the item to magnify and put the unit flat on the surface of the table. This would be nice if it focused at that distance. I contacted the company and they told me to return the unit...and I did. But the new one they sent me had the same problem. I was a little suprised they did not pay for the $8.00 to send it to them. So, I gave it away to a neighbor boy.

It is a very high quality magnifier at a reasonable price. The stand places the lens at the optimum distance for reading small print on maps and photo-reduced dictionaries. The clarity is excellent with little or no distortion.
