5.0 out of 5 stars La Carta Esferica, August 17, 2004

(REAL NAME)
La Carta Esférica by Arturo Pérez Reverte is probably the most complex I've read of his fiction works so far. I have immensely enjoyed three of his simpler but very successful novels about Capitán Alatriste because the 17th century backdrop that Pérez provides for his main character is historically well informed and the intrigue that the author places over the good but aging Capitán is exciting and humanly touching at the same time. I've also read his La Reina del Sur that seems more akin to La Carta because it takes place in modern Spain and it involves very believable contemporary characters. For me, however, La Carta is tops for the following reasons.

La Carta appears to me as the best work by Pérez Alatriste so far because he does the best job in exploring the psychology of his characters. The main character, Coy, an aging merchant mariner struggling to bring some sense to his chaotic and rudimentary life, gets caught up with a beautiful but crafty and intelligent woman who tries to double-cross him in the end. Pérez has an eye for slight facial gestures in his characters, especially in the men, which he employs as beautifully crafted literary vehicles to reveal hidden feelings in his characters. This is excellent writing which earned him high literary rewards, according to the publisher's notes in the back of the book.

I read La Carta very slowly and enjoyed it greatly. My Spanish maritime vocabulary came to life where there was none before. I recommend La Carta Esférica to anyone who can appreciate complex and deeply thought and researched fiction.
